Topic: Dj with CDJ or VDJ - Page: 1

Hello. I'm new at dj and trying to figure out what I should use, VDJ with one mixer or a mixer and to CD players...
I thought that VDJ would work but in a Norwegian forum I`m talking in one person says this:

Qute:

DONE.

In English: A Dj should be able to make good transits and have skills.. that you don't get trough software that does almost the hole job for you. And a nother person says that if you use VDJ you almoste wont get anny jobs and alt that..

I am wondering what you guys mean??

Sorry for my english.. im from Norway.

a dj should be able to recognize all tools at his disposal and adapt to those presented to him, failure to do this or accept it will in the long term make that person redundant, you have to make the decision for yourself, not what someone else may feel is the right thing to say on a forum post, you have to decide what you feel is comfortable for you in which ever software you finally choose to use, most programmes come with a trial period, give each one "your" trial period then make your own decision... me i'm happy with my selection, wonnabedj, you know your own style so just try and match up the proramme that gives you the most plusses

Thanks for god reply. I had decided to go for VDJ with an external mixer but when I get a message that a pro dos not use that, a pro dj uses CD and stuff like that. What do you think about that?

I think that's ridiculous.

Eventually all the "pros" out there will be using VDJ or some form of PC based program with timecodes. That's the way the industry is going.

That is what I have been thinking off to, I`m glad there is some one thinking in the same way i am and that im not totaly wrong..

So if I in the future want to be a pro DJ it would work just fine using VDJ and a external mixer??

And if that is fine, do you have anny mixer to recomend and i would need a soundcard to i think..

Thanks for great answears

wonnabedj, i've used the blackstuff, cd's and now digital, just wish the current format had been around when i first started out, can't get the flexibility as what you can nowadays and i much prefer todays way of working with music, whoever tells you otherwise are living in the past...

Hear hear!

When I first started dabbling as a kid in the late 80s, I was using vinyl. By the mid 90s, I was using CDs. In 2002 I went digital.

In the 80s, we were accused of cheating as artistes because we were just playing other peoples' music.
In the 90s, us CD users were accused of cheating because real DJs use vinyl.
In the 00s, we digital folk are accused of cheating because real DJs use CDJs.

You learn to ignore these people eventually.... :-)

RUNEY>>>TAKE CARE OF THIS>>>>LOL!!!

Use both, how about CDJ with VirtualDJ's timecoded CD's

Kills 2 birds with 1 stone, lol.

I understand, but when and if i get pro i want to have som playjobs and the guys from the other forum says that I would have problems with getting a job with my equipment?

And Jimmy B is that posible to use CDJ and stil have the music on the computer or do you then have to have cd`s??

There is a similar thread going on in another part of the forum, unless your a VIP you can't see it. Here are my feelings on the subject. I started DJing in 1983, nothing but vinyl. I switched to CDs and carried my turntables for three years, in case the CD players broke down. About 2 years ago I switched to VDJ/CUE, and still bring my CD players along in case of a problem with my PC. There is nothing wrong with using the latest technology.

In the old west it was more often than not the gun fighter who used the best technology, not the fastest draw, who won the gun fight. If anyone tells you "if you do not use turn tables your not a real DJ" look them dead in the eye and say "If God had intended man to fly he would have given us wings" It is the same sort of thinking that occurred over 100 years ago when air flight was just starting out.

Use whatever technology is best suited too your style, and your budget. Do not let anyone tell you using a PC and a controller is not real DJing. William Shakespeare said it best "to thyne own self be True".

But to answer your last question, yes, you can use time coded vinyls or CD and achieve a more traditional feel and effect if that is what your looking for.

Again thanks for great answears.

I think i have decided to go for VDJ and a external mixer and i need a soundcard too..

Is there annything you guys wont to recomend?

And what is timecoded vinyls and cd??

This might help explain it better than I could.

I started with CDs in '95 when I got into DJing. I resisted the switch to being a PC DJ, but once I did over two years ago, I've never looked back. I am (or would like to think I am) a pro DJ. I DJ over 50 weddings a year, and do probably 100 other events a year, and every one of them I use a PC running Virtual DJ and an external mixer.

Over here in the USA, it's not only becoming industry standard for a pro DJ to use some form or computer and software to DJ with, but if you're still using CDs, you're starting to be looked at as obsolete. People are super impressed by the gear too. I can't tell you how many people sneak up to take a peek at my gear and say how cool it is, but I can tell you nobody has ever dissed the tech gear.

hehe, funny guy...
So timecoded CDs is just you have a cd with nothing in it but it controls the hole thing in VDJ (I suck at explaning but i think i understod it)
So then i can advance from just a external mixer when i get bether to timecoded CD`s??

Basically, Timecoded Vinyl and CD's have a special code on them, the needle or laser picks up that code and Virtaul DJ, reads it and works out where in the mp3 file you are. So when you stop the vinyl or CD the mp3 stops and the music stops, when you scratch with vinyl or CD the mp3 and music scratch's. You can order the Timecode vinyls from the website and you can download the Timecode from the site then burn it to CD.

As for Soundcards, if you go down the timecode route, you will need a soundcard with 4 inputs (for your CDJ's or Turntables) and 4 outputs(2 for channel 1 of your mixer and 2 more for the channel 2). I would suggest the ESI Maya44 USB external soundcard, it's a popular and card it's it's ideal for VirtualDJ, I have one.

Hope this helps you.

yes, there is room to grow and change with this set up...

Ok, i now understand som more and the thing that i can change the setup once i get bether is great, I think i understand what timecode is now.
So im going for VDJ and a external mixer and i also need a soundcard since i have a laptop, and when i get bether i can advance..

Thanks a lot for great answers guys, it helps me a lot.

But since i need equipment i need recommendation from you guys what i should buy..

Big thanks

If I were you I would start with something like the Herc MKII or the RMX. They have built in soundcards and are very good budget controllers. Several VDJRadio DJ use the MKII. Or the Numark Total Control and the DJ i/o soundcard is another option. Or, you can look at something like the Ulcer midi mixers/controllers but, they cost a decent amount of money. Pioneer has some midi mixers..but they only control the crossfader, not the decks. Do your home work and I bet you'll make a good decision, your already asking the right questions, and in the right place......

that Norwegian guy in the forum was probably talking about DJ software such as Ableton and Mixmeister, where you mix semi-live.

DJ software such as VDJ, Traktor, SSL etc are for sure VERY MUCH djing, and is used by star djs all over the world;) It all depends on how you used it, so if you WANT to "cheat" you can, but there is no fun in that.

Even Pioneer players have sync, auto BPM, bpm readings and so on. Much like a DJ software

Selv en nordmann kan være dum ;) hehe
