Topic: If you laptop crashes? - Page: 1

Supposing you're at a gig playing with midi controller and suddenly your laptop crashes what would you do? :-)

Reboot and either be able to sing very well in the interim or have your iPod handy to plug in in the meantime. :)
 
panic :D no really I always have my ipad connected to a channel on the mixer.
 
does VDJ work with ipad too?
 
there is a remote for VDJ that works on iPhone-pod-pad so yes it works. But I was talking about connecting the ipad to the external mixer or in my case one channel on my VMS4
 
This trouble has indeed cropped up in the past. Not lately though. Thank goodness.

I have a CD on hot standby. Soon as I detect trouble I go to CD.

If the laptop doesn't restart I will play CDs and run out to the van and get the spare laptop I carry along.

Makes my gonads ache thinking about it.
 
It depends on what you are using. if you are running "everything" out of the laptop off the headphone jack, then you need to get a back up laptop or an I pod/Ipad.

I will bring an I pod, My amp has a separate channel to play it in case of a reboot of the laptop. So its a quick recovery.

I run a dual Denon DN-S1200 and it can also feed in the music in via USB sticks. I will load a pair of USB with music for that party and keep on hand in case of an "oops" that night.

if THAT fails, well, then I would just go to the bar, pound back some drinks, cuz its not your night to DJ...... j/k

The iPod Touch stays @ the ready... line in on the mixer!
 
CD player on stand-by beside me ('will just play one song if ever) and MacbookPro 13" beside it being used by my roadie/co-pilot on putting request altogether ('will just grab it from him just in case).

I use Imac on my main (aside from convenience of a bigger screen, it's also super stable)

I became paranoid when I encountered multiple crashes using PC.

With almost a year with Mac now, "No crashes yet using timecode and video out".
 
 
Ipod in place ready to play at the touch of a button and then Reboot. It happened only one time, but I was prepared!
 
sounds like a great idea :-) so to connect the ipod to the amp we got to use Twin RCA Socket Splitter right?

Ok maybe it hasn't happened YET to you but MAC's can and will crash, freeze, get viruses, harddrive failure and anything that could wrong will go wrong. Don't think that it can't happen cause that's just ludicrous.

As for me I work with a partner so there usually 2 laptops, if all else we both have Ipods.

Never had a crash yet (not without me making it happen..........fingers crossed!!)

I only use mac and have experienced crashes at home do to bad plugins or skin but never happened at a gig because I tested pligins and skins before hand.
 
I have a hilarious MAC story. So I was doing a gig quite a ways from home 2 weeks ago. One of the resident DJ's is talking about how his MAC never crashes, etc, etc. Gives me a hard time because I actually have a PC lappy with a MAC sticker on it. LOL!! (the sticker is there to be a smarta$$) Anywho, he is just warming up and his MAC crashes. The look on his face was PRICELESS! My Imitation MAC worked fine all night. I am actually toying with the idea of making the windows theme even look like a MAC....
 
Mac & PC have the same problems when running 3rd party software. Designating your lappy to only run VDJ, tweaking it and shutting off back ground programs is the only way to help prevent a crash. Technology is not perfect and failures can happen to anybody, at any time, in any format, on any platform.

Having a back-up plan, regardless of what it is, is your only insurance to keep the party going when things go wrong.

Speaking of back-ups... make sure you back-up your library and other data as often as possible.

I have a Macbook Pro and let me tell you, I had that problem only one time at a gig. I was shocked by this ordeal, but I always stay prepared for such events. It was a quick fix where I rebooted, changed the skin size, updated my driver and no one ever notice a difference. Good thing, I still use an analog mixer or I would've been TOAST!

Other than that situation, my Macbook Pro has been Flawless for gigs compared to my PC which would lag in the middle of a set!

Superaceman, How many external hard drives you carry? I carry two of them with the same data myself, because one time my kids thought my external was a hockey puck and I found it under my bed! Guess who has a lock on his man cave now? lol!
