Anybody know where to get DVD for older music videos, like the 50's and 60's?

probably looking at promo only in the states, check out the old compilation dvds as well

Unless they changed, they dont go back that far

Just search amazon. The music videos from that era are tv performances and clips from movies.

I have all the promoomly "Classic releases" and none go back to the 50's 60s. The first true "music video" wasn't released till August 1981 on MTV. (Buggles, Video killed the radio star) I remember when MTV actually played music videos. (Man I'm old)

As for the older stuff I've spent a lot of time trying to build up my oldies library (Songs Before 1981) and it hasn't been an easy task. Just as kamakuakane said you are dealing with cuts from movies or performances. The MAIN problem you have is the soundtrack many times is not suitable for playing due to poor quality. The trick is to find the song that has re-mastered and replace the old audio track. More often than not the song won't be a perfect match so have to do some editing, sometime just simple time stretch or lots of slicing & Dicing.

My last project was cleaning up "Grease" the movie. The soundtracks in the movie have a lot of background noise (squealing tires, screaming girls etc) which sound terrible when played. None of the "junk" sounds are on the audio release CD.
I don't think there's anywhere you can buy this kind stuff ready to play right of the box with decent quality.

Playing the ones I've re-mastered are obviously a copyright violation. I'm hoping if the FBI busts into my show they will see 90% of my videos are purchased with the legal rights to play them. I'd hate to end up in a prison cell with "Big Margi" for playing "Jail House Rock".....

Doubt you will find music prior to the 70's that is worth playing.

Funny story, well to me it was.
So I'm sitting in my hospital bed after surgery, its 2am and I'm on medication and was out most of the day.
The TV is on and I'm flipping channels.
Well along comes this dvd series that is everything I don't have pre mtv days, I mean obscure.

Well anyway the infomercial is running and it loops forever.
So I'm trying to remember the phone and website because I can't write it down and can't get out of bed to find a pen being so messed up and in pain.
I am in and out of consciousness and fearing I would not remember this, but I did.

Some really cool stuff on there, some is typical circa 1970 audio and video, but nice to have the copy.
Each artist has an intro splash screen which you have to cue around and is annoying.
The whole set cost me $120 USF.

Actually the Midnight Special DVDs are great for some of the 70s and early 80s music, occasionally you can find them at WalMart in the $5 bin. For older music best to check out amazon however the quailty will vary so be sure and read the reviews prior to purchasing.

If you want music videos from the 40's here is a DVD that we used.

Contrary to what people are saying, I have bought some great dvd's of the oldies. Four Tops, Temptations, Frankie Valli, Smokey, Elvis, Billy Joel, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Marvin Gaye, Supremes, Styx, etc.

thankyou... lol

Where did you get your oldies videos?

There is a lot of old video out there agreed, I use Tower and movie/music stores and Walmart too.
I don't find myself playing crowds that would ask or expect video from the 50's much.

I didn't say you couldn't buy them but I am saying the sound can be anywhere from decent to AM radio....
You are better off showing a U-tube video with horrid video quality with good sound than the reverse.

or if your a sad git like me with time to kill most days, re edit a new sound track to the video...

The sound quality is very good. I am very particular about the dvd's that I use for performances. Amazon is a great source. If you stick to the well known labels, the quality of the video and sound are very good. Just remember that the older the song there is a good possibility that the video quality from that era might not be so good. Movies are a great source for the older songs, just edit the video to include a better audio version of the song.
