Topic: How to come across new music?

Hi all...was just wondering some of the ways you guys come across new tunes...i like to spin trance/house but i also listen to rock and hiphop...but lately it just feels like i keep putting the same couple of tracks on repeat and would like any input on how you guys manage to come up with new music to listen to =)....

I Listen to online radios and off course there is always music channels on tv. Oh and build a healthy relationship with your neighborhood music store owner.
 
I generally use my ears, eyes and soul. The important thing is to always keep these open.

I have a Sony Ericsson w850 mobile with a function called track I.d. So any time I hear something I like I just use that function to find out what it is.

I spend a lot of time goin through forum threads, online sites and places where I see the things I'm interested in. I bookmark these and regularly try and shove as much info in my brain as possible.

Whenever I'm out having a good time I lock in the feelings of myself and others and then try and recreate that in my mixes.
 
I take a look at music charts every other week or so and make sure to listen to any tunes I haven't heard of to see if there is something I should purchase. You need to look at all the charts if you are trying to build a diverse collection.
 
That's a great question, I listen to online music stations and also read the charts. Also, friends are big contribuitors for me. They tell me all the time what songs DJ's are playing and how the crowd reacts to it.

...directly from the record labels and promoters. :) When I do have the time, which isn't much these days, I surf Masterbeat.com, Beatport.com, etc etc.

I'm one out of 150 or so DJs in the US that submit weekly charts to Billboard that compile the US Club Play Chart. I also have a mixshow on Sirius Satellite Radio so between the two I'm taken care of.

You listen to the radio staions and always tune into when they have the friday night or saturday night live mixes.

It depends!
I guess podcast are a great way to get to know what's really happening in the bis... get the free podcasts of your favorite djs...they always have something new to offer...plus they give u the title and sometimes the link to buy it on itunes.
a great source for new thing is beatport.com, but it costs! but man you get a huge library of new things! they have a great dj tool section too!

don't forget the most most important feedback source for new music

your customers.

even if you're in a "no request" club/venue/whatever, your customers are always gonna come up and ask for something you've never heard of even if you spend hours trolling through radio stations, subscription services, websites, etc.
 
I recall earlier editions of VDJ had a neat function that allowed you to save requested music so you could purchase or download later. Is this feature still available in 5.2.1?

Which show man? Do you use VDJ on the air live or?

yes.second icon to the right of the search bar (it save whatever u type in vdj/searchlog.
one day i had a dancer type her name and number there so i clicked too save it now how sweet is that!!hehe
i bet you couldnt do that with ANY other dj program out !!lolwould b runnin around lookin for a pen or a sharpie and some paper .lol
