Well I know a couple I've seen here use plazmas.
I always use rear projection, it keeps the projectors out of harms way and gets the screen right up to the dance floor.

Hey Lineman how does the spandex scrim show up in ambient lighting conditions?

I've been researching screen material to add a projector to my set up and essentially Spandex is the stuff that djscreens.com stuff is made out of.

The manufactured rear-projection stuff is greyish coloured stuff and it has advertised gain-amplifying properties.

Just checking in with the guys with the homemade stuff, how does it work with the hall's lights on?

When the lights are lowered in the hall, I don't have any worries

Hi Lumens = Hi Ambient Light
Gray Screen = Blacker Blacks

I use 4500 Lumen projector on mine, with a short throw lens. This is enough for parties with quite a bit of room lighting, but not enough for outdoors daytime. I would say that 2500 lumens should be absolute minimum you should have.

NEMAN55,

That looks really cool and not so expensive.
With this setup you don't have people walking between the sceen and the beamer.
Guess that this would be great for a lot of people.

The spandex material I use here was bought at a local fabric store and is not the same thickness as DJSCREEN because I have that screen also and use that for larger gigs where room is available. It works real well considering the unit is used for small venues with everybody being able to see it very well from across two dining rooms with the lights on.Its not a hall per say but the lights are on for the duration.
You will get a hot spot if you get up close. The mirror is angled up just a bit to reflect back onto the screen.Mine will be seen if you get up close and look down somewhat into it.
If you are familiar with the term hotspoting (where you can see the projector light through the screen) this will happen with this material.
Proper rear projection screens wont allow that.

Other then that it works excellent and brings the curious up for closer looks every time I use it.
Definitey go with a high lumens 2000 or better.

I beamer I bought recently is 2100 lumens So I hope it's good that way.

I've called around the local retail locations for home theater, commercial suppliers etc, and no-one really has any proper rear projection screens in stock, all special order in the $1500-$2300 range.

So Homemade is the way I'm gonna have to go.

Try here..
http://www.gi-info.com/projscreen.html

I bought some screen cut right off the roll unsewn,no seams for a simulator project. If I remember right it cost about $300

I beleive the size was about 6' length and whatever it was across on the roll..(6 ft?)

If you want a deal on a screen in the US contact Screenworks in Chicago, Ill.
They have new, used and refurbished screens of all types and brands.
Good people to deal with.

That is called a "full dress kit"
I use the bottom skirt only.

I use the 6x8 the most and it "fits" in most venues without hassle.

@rick, never seen that "dressing" of the screens and stands in the UK before, have seen a cover up but not to this standard, looks really nice and professional.

It's amazing what differt things you can use for your video gig.
Also the screen from the picture that mp3rick posted is a real nice one.

I did did yesterday:

- Bought a truss (7 feet)
- Bought a 42 inch lcd tv
- Bought a board (3 feet)
- Bought a spotlight

The truss will be standing on the board. Then at 5 feet high I will hang the lcd on the struss. From above I will put a spotlight shining to the floor.
When it's ready I make a picture of it.

One question for everyone that has rear projection....

What do you use to project the images (Eric Sands, djanthony, LINEMAN55, etc)?Is Tex carpet or what material is it?

Becouse I want to buy something like this, to fix it to the truss, but I don´t know what to get for rear projection...

Thank you a lot!!!
