What do people think about when they offer the dj a drink / shot. don't they realize drinking is part or out package for playing at least I hope for most of us club DJ's. Sometimes I decline the offer because I feel guilty taking thier money like that but I learning to accept.
Case and point - this past Friday I had my traditional to beers before the show. The old DJ that I replaced came up and started talking and we had some laughs. He offered to buy a shot in which I said I would buy the first round, maybe I didn't trust what he might put into it...lol.
We toasted and I ordered my second 2 beers as normal. Sometime later he comes up with another shot and we toast again. Then another guest wants to buy me a shot and about an hour later someone else wants to by me shot / beer. Now I have to cut myself off from drinking any more so I can focus on whats really important- flirting.
This is happens all the time and I have to laugh at people who waste thier money on me. Is taking a shot together the same thing as "breaking bread" together?
I'm I supposed to start a fan club and if you buy me a drink you might be considered an " unofficial " member where you will get future drinks for free or the occational shout out. Or maybe the " your my dog " handshake.
Maybe none of this is actually true and it may be that people feel sorry for the DJ who is locked in a small and usually over heated box. We watch other people having fun and loosing thier minds to our creativity and the offering is just a way of saying thank you.... NOW PLAY MY SONG you a$$hole.

Try this Fat, "Thanks but I'm done doing shots for the night, If you really feel the need to do something nice for me, tip the bartender a little more and say its from me" and watch the bartender be a lot nicer too you......

I don't drink when I work. I've heard too many stories where the failure of a night was blamed on the drunk DJ. Even if we only have a couple, they see the drink in our hands and we're automatically drunk. My food and drink are free at my club accounts, but I use it for buying the people not working a drink. I do like that suggestion of telling them to tip the bartender extra for me, though. I may have to steal that one :)

can't agree more. Any professional dj would'nt drink, more so if its their own business as health and saftey is priority. Being a mobile Dj we are responsible for transportation, electrics etc etc... so if anything serious occurred on site, eliminating alcohol from the equation removes amunition for blame for being drunk. Having said all that it gives creedence to the punters if they think your a shit a DJ you can't blame it on the booze, DOH :)

I love Tearemup's suggestion: refuse the drink, but ask the guy (or girl) to give an extra tip to your favourite bartender...
Personally, I see nothing wrong with accepting a drink, but I will only accept one from the same person. Afterall, I have a job to do!

Even though the majority of bar gigs tend to include drinks where I'm from, I tell the owner in advance that when someone wants to buy me a cocktail - charge them. More money for the bar = happy owner ;)
