Topic: Attention Dell Pros out there...

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Question.... A friend of mine's computer was completely infected with spyware. The final decision was made to back everything up and do a wipe and a re-install of XP. NOW... I used the CD that Dell provided with the computer to do a reinstall of XP. I deleted the partition... Re added the partition, formated it etc. I reinstalled Windows XP. No errors during the installation.... When the computer restarted, it freezes on the logo. The little blue start up thing swivels by once, then the second time, it just stops dead in its tracks and freezes. I turned off the computer and restarted it. The black screen comes up saying Windows was not shut down properly... How do you want to start it? Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking...etc. I chose safe mode. It started it up fine. I shut down the computer, restarted it, same damn thing. It freezes at the logo.

I did a chkdsk using the Windows Repair, I did a bootfix, still didn't work.

I then tried reinstalling Windows using the same restore CD (without formating again). It installed fine, no errors .... AND THE SAME DAMN THING! It freezes at the logo.

It's a Dell Dimension. Brand New only a little over a year old....

Any suggestions???? you think the install CD might be doing a bad install?
Thanks in advance....

If you used your disc on his PC then there is your problem. Each OS has its own registration code. I would bet your problem is your CD is registered to your OS.....but I could be wrong..maybe someone who knows better will answer you.....Good Luck

you could do another re install but this time with no partitions see where that takes you...

Delete everything? Dell's usually come with a small section for restore as well........ get rid of this too??

i would, just do a complete re install start a fresh, and see whats causing the problem from there...

Thanks will try tomorrow.

Dell OS Cds can be used on any Dell computer. laptop or desktop. It has to be dell only. XP version only. Desktop or laptop No registration required.. restart computer press F11 and start from CD, dvd rom

The OS is just the OS. Dell also supplies a dics with all utilitys and drivers, however I recommend you go to dells website, you get the latest versions.

Insert the Disk, if you havent blown away all partitions, do so. Make 1 large partition, and format it. Install fresh OS (No Repair). After XP is loaded go into device manager and install the drivers for the devices XP does not have drivers for. Afterwards, do update with Microsofts website.l

Please note: that on Dell Systems there is a MBR or master boot record system encoded on all dell systems so you can use the restore partition.

If you re-install the operating system via CD that came with the computer that erases out the original MBR and it will not let you restore the computer using the F11 key. Now if you have another Dell system you can recover this problem BUT you have to COPY a MBR from another Dell computer using the Windows XP operating system. To do this: you have to get a copy of dsrfix.zip and unzip the files and run the mbrsaver file to copy the master boot record from the computer that hasn't "lost" the original MBR file.

Dell does not supply you with the mbr file nor do they offer tech support on this.

You can go to Dell forum's and find more info on this topic or hopefully this web address is still active: http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/fixes.htm

I had the same problem with my laptop, I tried to re-install windows XP professional by disc and it totally wiped out the original master boot record. I'm glad I have another Dell system, so I was able to copy it's original MBR and repair the F11 function and access the restore partition that wasn't deleted and it worked like a charm, my laptop is back to original factory settings.

If you can access this information: PLEASE READ ALL INFO AND BE CAREFUL, PRINT OUT ALL INSTRUCTIONS and follow it promptly or you might mess up the hard drive binary system and have a bigger headache.

Now the MBR restore software is on floppy disc, just dowload the file and unzip it to floppy and follow the instructions, it should fix everything back to the correct settings.

Good luck,
Sincerely yours,
Jeff Pino
