Hi everyone,

I am a mobile DJ and karaoke Jock and am considering the move from cd to laptop dj'ing/karaoke. I have a number of questions to ask before I take the plunge and would appreciate any advice.

My proposed setup is as follows.

Dell laptop Intel t7200 cpu, 2gb Ram, 100gb 5400rpm hard drive, on board soundcard. (already purchased)
Behringer Xenyx 1832 fx mixer with FBQ feedback detection system.

I am considering purchasing a Numark DMC2 to control virtual DJ but this will mean I need a decent external soundcard to get the audio in stereo to two seperate channels on the mixer.

Has anyone got experience of the Numark DMC2?

Can anyone recommend a decent quality USB or Fire wire sound card preferably without ASIO (although I am not sure if this is possible) as my research seems to suggest that it causes quite a few problems and crackles and pops in the audio? The Mixvibes U46 Mk2 card seems to be the best that I can find so far...

But if I am using several USB devices would I be better off with a fire wire audio interface in order to lessen the load on the USB bus (also responsable for introducing pops and crackles into the mix) or am I worrying over nothing?

Lastly, and this won't affect my purchase of VDJ but is there a plugin in VDJ that would allow me to remove the blue background in a karaoke mp3g and replace it with a live visual feed from a camera. This may be pie in the sky stuff but before it broke I owned a multi disc cdg changer with this function. If not perhaps this is something the VDJ people could work on?

Thanks to you all in advance for your help and time.

Brendon.

Forget the dmc-2 get a hc4500 has a sound card and its just a better controller for 100 bucks more you get an awesome soundcard.

Hi Brendon!

While I can't answer all of your questions, I do have experience with some of them.

I've used the Numark DMC2, and found it to be a very good unit, overall. In the system I had the DMC2 in, I also used a Rane MP4 mixer, which has two channels of sound card built in. I believe Numark (among others) also have mixers with built in soundcards. I haven't found any quality issues in doing so, and the convenience is terrific.

While I can't be considered "unbiased" here (I'm a product rep. for them), I also am a big fan of the Hercules RMX, which is an all-in-one: soundcard, mixer and midi controller that works extremely well with Virtual D.J. When working with karaoke or video the fact that the physical crossfader on the RMX (or it's predecessor the MK2) control both the audio and the video make the job a lot easier. The DMC2 has a crossfader "feed" button that you have to remember to use, when mixing video or graphics. Fewer steps with the Hercules.

I'm hoping others here can assist you with other parts of your question, and offer opinions.

Good luck with it all!

Get a HC4500 and all your probelms are solved. The Denon has built in sound cards. The DMC2 doesnt and then you need to buy a separate soundcard. Denon is a better make than the Numark. No more headache after buying the Denon..

Hey all,

Thanks for your comments. The Denon unit is sadly out of my price range at the moment and I have bought the DMC2 anyway and am waiting for an ESI gigaport AG 8 channel USB card to arrive. The Xenyx mixer I had my eye on turned out to be stolen!!! So I have a Yamaha MG16 6FX mixer to route all the karaoke mics through and to add reverb etc.

When I get my second rig up and running some next year, I will hopefully have a little more cash to throw at it. Maybe, Denon, Rane etc then. In the meantime I mostly DJ weddings and karaoke so have need of a 19" rackmountable mixer with a minimum 4 channels. Recomendations appreciated again.

Still looking for that ever elusive video plugin that will let me mix live video with in the background of a karaoke track. I friend owns a 3 disc cdg karaoke changer made by a Far Eastern company called ShiShi with this feature built in but they don't make it any more and I want to migrate all karaoke files to the laptop anyway. I'm sure a reasonably skilled programmer could do this fairly easily, maybe you could suggest someone to ask?

Many thanks everyone.

I have the DMC 2 and The Gigaport sound card, and think you made a good choice. There is no question that the Denon is a fine unit, but it is only a 2 input sound card. Virtual DJ can utilize 3 stereo outputs. You will now be able to have control over your sampler, without using another sound card. When is someone going to take that extra step, and release a controller with 3 outputs? This is the way VDJ should go, in releasing their own controller.

excellent points .....i'd be surprised if the VDJ controller wasn't a gleam in a frenchman 's or norwegian's eye .......
