It has been my experience to just buy a web compatible video camera like the sony. It has a switch in it to become a webcam. I have mine working since January.
 
the hc21 will operate as a webcam, I tryed the USB streaming but still nothing, no pop up menu or anything when I hit the device or source buttons. I know it's not the camera because the picture shows still through yahoo or the sony picture package software, just not through VDJ;^]
 
 
Hmmm, if that one works then mine should be working too. Could this be a faulty plugin in in my instalation?;^]
 
I had a look over the specs of that camera and from what I could tell there wasn't much good reviews from it. It is lower end of what I have listed above. Maybe that version was the beta of todays models.
 
I've never had any problems with it except this, I use it as webcam all the time. Is there a way I can try reinstalling the plug in without doing a full reinstallation? The fact that the device & source buttons in VDJ doesn't bring up the drop down menu mentioned in other posts make me think it's a problem with my copy of the plug in;^]
 
I use this, and it is working fine, for my mobile gigs. The pan & tilt is not as fast as I would like. I paid half that price, because I caught it on sale. It is not working that good in my club, because it is too dark. I am still experimenting with location. I just got this. I've had it for two weeks, and it has fast pan & tilt, but have only tried it on a TV. I am slow to test things because I work so much.

I got that one also...

Do you find that sometimes you just loose your X-10 drivers and must reinstall them from gig to gig?

Also you are correct the Pan and Tilt are a little too slow for me too but it gets the job done and the crowds love it in my area and don't really seem to notice that...

I appreciate the feedback guys, but I'm not about to run out & buy another camera, I'd use a video switcher before I did that. I just want to get the plugin working with the camera I have, can someone at least explain why the menu doesn't come up from the source & device buttons in VDJ?;^]
 
I'm sure you have already thought of this but do you have to programs that uses the video card open... example: sony capture and VDJ at the same time.
 
Naw, the only programs I use with VDJ open are Rhapsody & Napster & even those were closed for this testing;^]
 
I'll have to work more on this later, I just got booked for a gig only nine days away & have much preperation to do;^]
 
What video capture device are you using? Do you have the software installed for that device? Does it work through that software? If so, close that software, and open VDJ. By the way, I have to use the same usb port for my capture device.

OK, I just re-read one of your post, and it does work outside of VDJ. It seems as though VDJ is not seeing your capture device.

I just wanted to make sure of things... on the camera you went into menu and switched it from standard camera to webcam.

On other capture programs you don't need to do this. Next what Cable are you using from camera to computer. That also makes a difference in my experience.
 
There's no button in the hc21 menu to switch, it just automaticaly picks up the USB stream in other programs like yahoo & vegas. I do however use it more through the giga pocket inputs via s video. I've got a DV cable around here somewhere I can try, gotta find it first though. After I get through my gig next week I might go buy a cheap webcam just to try it out on something differant. It'd be nice though to be able to use it through a TV tuner like the giga pocket, I seem to get a much better picture that way;^]
 
So I'm a little slow. I did a search for giga pocket, and it seems to be software. What are you connecting your camera to, on your computer? S-video cable from your computer to s-video what, on your computer? Do you have a link?
 
Giga Pocket is a PVR (aka TV tuner card) on Sony Vaio desktop computers. It has s video ins on the front and back, I connect in the front. Also my graphics card is a Radeon 9200 128 mb;^]
 
The how to is listed in your manual on page 45

Like I said, you have to go into menu in your camera

How to use a Sony® camcorder as a webcam using USB Streaming.

IMPORTANT:
Not all Sony® camcorders are equipped with a USB Streaming port. For compatibility information, or if you require further assistance with any of the steps below, consult the instruction manual of your camcorder. A copy of the camcorder instruction manual is available in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site
The USB Streaming driver is not compatible with the Apple® Mac OS® operating system.
The computer should have a factory installed USB port and compatible webcam software, such as Microsoft® NetMeeting®.
NOTE: This procedure cannot be performed when using the battery of the camcorder as a power source. If the camcorder is turned on, but not recording or playing a tape, it will automatically turn off after 5 minutes to conserve battery power. In addition, please be advised that this procedure may not work for all Sony camcorder models even when using the AC power adapter. Some models have an automatic demonstration mode that will activate after 5 minutes if the camera is turned on but not recording or playing a tape.
Install the USB Streaming driver on the computer from the CD provided with the camcorder.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Plug the AC power adapter for the camcorder into a working electrical outlet and then 3. connect it to the camcorder.
4. Connect the supplied USB cable to the camcorder and computer.
5. Turn on the camcorder by moving the POWER switch to the CAMERA position.
6. In the camcorder menu, set the USB STREAMING option to ON.

On the computer, start the webcam software.

NOTE: Contact the software manufacturer for assistance with setting up or using the webcam software.
 
I forgot to mention in the last posting that you do need a cable. S-cable will not work for streaming.

I suggest a 4 pin to USB. I would stay away from the ( 1394 FIREWIRE ) I found it to be too hot for the signal to go threw and you might end up with signal lines in the video output.
