I don't know about you guys, but I first started DJ'ing through love of the music, I'd hear songs I liked being mixed by radio DJ's and on mix CD's, and thought that I'd love to do the same.
Years later I find myself struggling to find reason as to why I should mix, today’s music just doesn't cut it, for me it's largely cheap, recycled "copy & paste" and has no credibility as music, the old songs just don't sound the same anymore.
So I ask, when the music is no longer enjoyable, doesn't this just become a mundane job and/or dead hobby?
Also, if you don't share my opinion about the direction of mainstream music, please post me a list of the songs that have excited you within the last year or so.

I feel you, but there are gold out there...
And there are LOADS of off-chart goldies, in any genre... But we dont hear that often... Its not played.
The felt "music gone crap" feeling we all got, are mostly because CHART hits.. And those songs gets rotated so often we get sick of the tracks... And it worse now than before, since we got music "all around" these days, radios/music TVs etc are all over... At bus, at home, at office...
First time I heard Rihanna - Umbrella, I thought it was a bit cute.. Today it makes me puke! lol ;)
And same goes for other over-rotated/played songs.. Who with a good mind would play Call On Me for pleasure listening today ;)
I could give you a bunch of recent great songs...
Some recommended tracks (depending on what genre you like) that I love (as of now, hoping it dont get overplayed)
- Morgan Page feat Lissie - The Longest Road (Deadmau5 Remix) - Awesome Prog house track!
- Brandi Carlile - The story - Fantastic pop/rock tune
etc etc etc...

I've been feeling the same thing lately and because it's the main stream people who want to here a song because it's played on the radio. I can put together a whole set of new and underground stuff that hasn't hit the airwaves yet... BUT NOOOO, they still request by the numbers the same ole songs every weak. I started remixing the songs so I have multiple versions of one song but after while the novelty starts to run out due to reward vs effort. I was thinking of going back to TTs so I can have a little more creativity and put more fun back into the game.

This is why VDJ Radio is so nice..forward thinking listeners who enjoy the mix...not the music, but I digress. You are experiencing the same thing every club jock goes through...I went through it 20 years ago...."You Can't Touch This?? Again?? How about you just shoot me in the head and we'll call it even?"....Now is the time for both Fat and Bren to put their metal to the test. Are you a club jock? Or a mobile jock? Or, do you need to explore different areas to keep this fresh? Or, is it time to quit? Only you can answer this. Remember why you got into DJing and see if its strong enough to keep you at it.

I started remarketing for mobile again. The time + effort = reward is greater. I'm still keeping my club but just switched to Fridays and not looking for a Saturday so I can have time to enjoy time off. I like going to see and meeting other jocks. It's nice just sitting and not doing anything when I go out. I miss traveling through the state and knowing there are people who really appreciate the effort. And I like getting paid for 80+ hours for the work of 4-6 hours.
Basically I just had to step back and not put to much into one basket.

Bag i think your in a prime position start digging for music. Look to unsigned or independant artists. If you can find a bunch of nice unknown tracks then focus on mixing that for yourself. Have you ever created your own tracks? You might want to create things the way you would like to hear them. The downside of djing is that paying customers pay to hear all that same old shit over and over = insane dj

i'd add to what others are saying that I only got back into DJing because I was sick to the back teeth of what I was hearing 95% of the time. I much preffer what I hear earlier on in the evening and find it hard to motivate myself in clubs sometimes.
I'm not stuck in 1 genre and like most of us on here have always loved music (Except Metal & Urban). Just think mate you could be Lisa Lashes and have to play the same old hard house tunes until you retire. That will be fun when she's 50.
Explore other avenues and get back to loving the music.
Here's my Tune to cheer you up........ENJOY!

Yea I don't know how some of the DJ's do it, playing largely within one sub genre for 5 hours a night, it would drive me insane.
Personally I enjoy the challenge of keeping the flow going whilst mixing across loads of genres, and this is most appreciated when done with the songs people want to hear, because they know the song and know it's being presented differently whilst not being manipulated beyond recognition, but when the mainstream ceases to offer music of a reasonable-club friendly standard, this proccess breaks down.
I like a lot of underground house, but I know buying it is just self indulgent because it wont be appreciated here at all.

Another issue, which is going onto another topic, is the slump in the market at the moment.
Clubs and pubs in the UK have not been doing very well lately, many of them in my town are only half full on a Saturday night.
Rising alcohol prices, the smoking ban and the general down turn in the market (where people have less disposable income for blowing on alcohol etc), is causing less demand for local DJ's.
Something which has really changed lately, the three main clubs in town are all getting big acts and names in, and two of them previously only ever got the local DJ hero’s in, the place I DJ'd last year is now getting the Ministry of sound, Freemasons, and other chart topping dance acts in on Saturday nights, so to get work there is going to be tough now.

Yes even though the versions or remix's you do might be better than the original some people go crazy because you've changed it.
I have not felt the love for at least five years now however I have finally got on top of my business and now I'm going to start and push my new thing - my own DJing, playing music I like myself for like minded people. No Requests! this is possible to achieve but very difficult however if I stay committed I know I'll pull it off. DJing is about playing music you enjoy yourself, mixing and just having fun. people pick up on whether or not your having a good time or not and if your in the zone/totally on one, part of creating a good atmosphere is you yourself are enjoying it! people see that and love it.
I'm currently looking for my groove find out what I like again and then I'm having a new site made that has fixed fee's and list's the music genre's I play and don't play take it or leave it mother f@&kers! n I'll take it from there.
One other thing I would like to add is that I think this is quite normal as I know a lot of DJ's that after years of service seem to get to breaking point were it's make or break time, they either start enjoying it more by playing more of what they like or they would rather quit. From what I have seen once you have made this decision it usually goes ok.
I think I can account for a lot of the equipment that Iv bought due to boredom of the music, it's been my way of keeping it interesting.
