I want to personally THANK you guys who passionately post(ed) about how good your TOSHIBA laptops work with VDJ.
THANK YOU.
I didn't want to purchase the wrong laptop, so I lugged my huge Dell XPS CPU to the club for many months searching and reading laptop topics here in the forum.
Taking your advice, I finally ordered my Toshiba Satellite Pro® : A210 : A210-EZ2203X
http://explore.toshiba.com/laptops/satellite-pro/L300/A210-EZ2203X
I play a lot of video (most popular formats) and last night I had my first performance with it at the club I play at (6 hour gig) - it worked flawlessly. In one word "PERFECT".
SPECS (in case the link is erased)
$849. USD
AMD Turion™ 64 X2 Dual-Core Mobile Technology TL-60
Windows XP Pro
2.0GHz
2048MB
ATI® Radeon™ X1200
5400rpm (Hard drive speed)
TV-out (S Video)
I use: Audio 8, WD 500GB External HD
FYI: I don't use TCV (I use a USB controller)
I initially had some "Crackling Popping" when I first ran Virtual DJ. Tried different things and finally called Toshiba's Tech Support (which is outstanding) and they provided me with some guidance.
Here are the TWEAKS I did;

NOW, I find myself being one of you guys passionately posting about Toshiba.
Here are some of the post that helped me decide on Toshiba.
Thanks again to all who posted.

Tigerdirect has a refurb for $739 makes me think it may be time to stop lugging the mini pc and move to lappy. My only downfall would be XP and not Vista.

I'm running vista on my Toshiba with no issues at all. Since the latest rev. came out I haven't had the freeze issue with my ICDX's either.

I can't fault my Toshiba, had a few problems with it when I first downloaded the Pro version, but now it's sorted, it's fine.
Had a issue with rev7, but with the new Herc drivers it's running like a dream. I would recommend Toshiba to anyone.

@Diamond G, the Toshiba you specify in this post seems to use shared video memory as opposed to dedicated. Surprising that you say it works so well playing videos. Can you confirm this again and elaborate a little on how much video mixing you do ? Do you mix from 1 video to another using a lot of effects at the same time etc ? Are you using hardware acceleration etc.. ?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I have to ask the same questions as Digijoc-Mele. I have a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4094. The only way for the Sonique ambients and the video transitions to work, is to turn "on" hardware acceleration. When I do that, I get this ugly yellow stripe down the middle of my video output. Turn it "off", the yellow stripe goes away but the only transition that works is a "fade" and the ambients quit working. This setup works fantastic on my Gen-X-PC 5792 which is a high-speed gaming laptop with 512Mb of dedicated graphics memory.

Hey there guys;
Hope I can answer all of your questions.
I have “use hardware acceleration” checked on VDJ’s video settings.
My entire video/audio collection is on the WD external HD with all videos loading without any problems.
There is a known issue with WD’s External HD.
This is a related topic, and although mine does spin down after the predetermined time of inactivity – mine started right up with only a couple of sec’s delay (experience this both with my XPS CPU and the Toshiba)
http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/82961/General_Discussion/1_TB_Hard_drives.html?highlight=spin%20down
My format is about 50% – 75% videos (mpeg, vob, wmv, avi) therefore I mix from one video to another for more than ½ my performance. I used all the transitions but mostly the “default” Transition because I like the fact that both playing videos can be seen on rotating windows as I ride the mix (sometimes riding it as long as a whole minute).
When I do not have a music video playing, I have an mpeg Club ID loop playing with a lot of color changing graphics via VDJ’s Settings > Video > Options > “Use this plugin for audio-only files”. Therefore the video card is humming along with actual motion video 90% of the time. The other 10% are club pics (jpegs).
There is a known issue with the clipbank that I did experience once that night.
http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/86880/General_Discussion/Anyone_had_this_problem_with_a_clipbank_.html?highlight=clipbank%20fast
I activate the video cross-fade via Keyboard shortcuts.
I do not use djcel’s ShowLogo add on (or any others), but plan to install it later - it's an awesome add on.

About the Video Card:
I had my own questions about the ATI® Radeon™ X1200 and asked Toshiba rep about it. He said that if I was playing graphic intense video games then this was NOT the laptop for me. But said that playing ripped videos should be fine and if there were any issues I had two options:
1.) Add more RAM (this is according to him)
2.) Return it for a FULL refund with in 15 days.
With that kind of return policy and the excellent reviews from fellow VDJ users, it was a chance I was willing to take (glad I did).
FYI: To give it a good run: I played several 2-3 hour non-stop sessions in those 15 days. One day while here at home, I loaded over 100 videos on to the AUTOMIX and let it play. It played every single video I loaded non-stop for 12 hours without any freezes, hiccups, or other issues.
PS: This was my first full performance with this baby and it performed like a champ. I pray I get no bad surprises.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for clarifying Diamond G.
From what I have been able to gather, there is NO RAM onboard the x1200 and all video memory is being used from the main system RAM in a shared fashion. Can you confirm this ? If so, I assume there is some BIOS setting where you allocate how much system RAM can be used by the Video Engine.
I do have yet another question. Playing videos with smooth slow .. long ride mixes is one thing. But how is the performance for more active manipulation of the videos ? For example, if you are executing a loop on one deck and executing a Stutter start on the opposite deck, does the Video effortlessly keep in sync with audio and does the media you are stuttering respond without latency to your hitting the stutter key. (I think you said before that you use MIDI control). I have seen on the ATi x1600 with dedicated video memory on a powerhouse laptop, where even though the onscreen monitor might have a slight delay, the S-Video output driven by the hardware acceleration does not skip a beat.
Interested in your reply since I know a lot of folks who struggle to find a laptop that can do the job and if what you are saying about this laptop is all good, they can get it down the street at the local Office Depot store (USA).
Is this the one ?

Hello digijoc-Mele ;
I read the manuals that came with the laptop and didn’t see any detailed info regarding the x1200 video card (more specifically the on-board memory). Maybe other fellow VDJ’ers can tackle this question.
Don’t know if this link has anything that may help;
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308417
FYI: I didn't tweak any memory settings on my Toshiba. I'm running it's factory setting.
With regard to your question:
In the above scenario, the audio kept up flawlessly throughout, the media (in this case another video) that I was stuttering over the looped video responded without latency to me hitting the stutter key over and over. Both videos that are playing and showing on the S-video output demonstrate a millisecond (almost unnoticeable) freeze at the end of the loop as it reinitiates the loop. Again, the audio is flawless and both videos play fine until the loop actually loops and then the millisecond freeze (almost unnoticeable) occurs.
The USB controller I use is similar in function to the old DENON 2000F MKII, so there is just solid straightforward mixing - sometimes very fast mixing between videos playing only about 30 sec’s of each and other times riding the mix. I do use the loop function while playing videos mostly at the intro’s.
Hope this helps.

With Toshiba it's all about the support you receive but you pay for it with the spec you receive that is usually not as advanced as the competitors but then to be honest I think its worth it.

Glad to see you found a nice laptop Diamond!! I LOVE my sattelite(a210-s7433)!!!
I crossfade with the x-session(first generation(not m-audio)).i didnt tweek my lappy either just installed what was needed for certain plugins to work .
i confirm that video mixin is 100% flawless with VDJ(all effects and transitions!)
Btw:,I just got hired @ a motorcycle club and i've been recording my sets on dvd.I do a lot of scratchin ,remixin,etc . mostly hip-hop and r&b and oldies/old school. and the only problem i've had is the lost of a time code signal(it happened 2 times but different events and yes i was pissed!!)but i quickly unselected timecode on that deck and finished the night with one tccd. :(
Thank You dj Format for your awesome v-mix skins!! i love them all!!

i will see if i can figure out how to upload one of my video mixes .will most likely have to edit it last nights recording was 6hrs long 1:45 mins olides with sonique fx and club name scrolling across the screen(at the end of this there are a few old rap vids mixed in with sonique fx.
title two is 4hrs all video mixing/scratching with logo scrolling across the screen.
we've been giving them away to promote the club night. i reiceved many compliments but i know if i had a nou5 or equilevent it would be soo much better and easier for me . :)
