Forgive my ignorance as I am sure this has been asked. I have been ripping CDs for years much like most of you Im sure. som eof my Mp3s are probably ripped at different settings than others. Is there a way to convert all of them to the same settings bit rate etc.
If I have ripped a new CD as opposed to one burned a few years back the new one is significantly louder. Does this happen to you??
I saw the setting in the frum for Itunes settings as I use that most of the time (for ripping and edit Mp3 Tags)
I buy my MP3's from Amazon now as they do not come with that protection in them.
This is a great forum and you guys do a great job of keeping us clueless guys in the mix. I love My software I just need to fine tune some stuff...
Thank you Thank you

What ever program you use to rip the cd's to any bit rate you choose. The problem lies in the actual recording of the song. If you notice older songs have a softer sound than the newer songs and so forth. If you have a program that you can go in and increase the overall sound. I sometime will increase my dance songs by couple of db. Of course theres more that goes into this but I enjoy tinkering.
So the bottom line is that it all falls in place of the CD mastery.

I use Platinum Notes. It's basically a batch converter to bring your files to the higher quality. Platinum Notes is completely automated. You can process your entire music collection by clicking just one button.

I've been using it for about 6 months. I've "upgradded" around 20,000 files, even cd's from 2001 that I ripped at a 96 bitrate. They all sound great and even leveled. I have not tried ripping these same disk again @ 320- But I'm sure it would only be a subtle difference in quality, and likely some level issues (either too loud or too quiet).
One issue I did have, was running other apps while using PN. Which turned a few songs into chipmunk versions. This was a rare occurence, but it also happened with a couple of my ghetto-tek tracks. Since PN creates new files, you can allways scan the original again. The best thing to do with a large batch is to run it before you go to bed.

Hey rusmokingtoo, when you scan MP3 with PN that was previously scanned with VDJ, you lost the BPMs and all the info VDJ put in the archive??

Since it creates a new file, I'm going to say yeah...
I actually use Mixed In Key (same creators as PN) which saves bpm and key in comment, and on the file name as well if you wish.
You can save ID3 tags with Platinum Notes, but it will not transfer .xml, or .mxm files- at least as far as I know. VDJ still reads the key info from Mixed In Key, but I had to rescan files for bpm info. I was also able to read and sort bpm's from my comment column, which were saved in my ID3 tag.
Mixed In Key has several different options for location of your bpm and key info...

You cant redecode a low rate mp3 to a high rate mp3, and get better quality. It will only get worse, and will never get better than the original (the low rate mp3)
To get high rate mp3s, you need to re-rip the mp3s, not re-decode

Platinum Notes eliminates distortion, adjusts volume, improves dynamics and corrects the pitch. There are demo's of it's "improvements" on the PN website(linked above).
While what Norway says about "quality" is likely partly true, however the files still do sound better. After processing, all your files they will be at the same level and same bit rate. This is the main issue, especially if your using a Herc MKII, which has no gain knob. Even when getting qaulity files from Beatport, the levels of the original tracks may vary. VDJ's auto gain match is an option you can try, but your likely still going to have issues- especially if bitrates are different. I'm not knowledged in the science behind it, somthing to do with compression. I speak mainly from experiencing the same frustrations that started this thread. Ever since purchasing PN, I've been very pleased with how all my files sound.
Of course(I guess, I'm not a expert) if you re-rip your entire cd collection at a 320kbps it's going to have a better quality then when your did it at 128kbps. However your still going to have level issues, as all albums are mastered/recorded in various ways. On the other hand if you have a file that is totally thrashed with pops and hissing, it's still going to sound like dog doo-doo no matter how much you try to fix it.
