Topic: User Location Instead Of Globe? - Page: 1

We all know how ready Atomix is geared for change when the community voices their opinion on a certain subject and of late this particular subject has been popping up in unrelated threads and i suppose am guilty of it too for adding to it. I thought i might as well make a post on it so it can be completely discussed amongst the community where people can voice their opinions on it with either a negative or positive response and then afterwards if in a negative reply just let the matter drop.

Below i've manipulated a forum page on how it may look with the ideas that are now being proposed and i myself put this forward last march 2007 and no doubt somebody will have suggeted it before me, instead of the globe where you have to navigate away from the page your on to find where in the world the person you are talking to or find where they may be selling an item, in which country, then navigate back to that page, sometimes its either slow loading or does not work, would it not be simpler and quicker to have a quick reference as shown below



As users have to fill in there global co-ordinates it would be simpler and quicker to select your countrys flag, fill in the name of the country and the region of where you live and as you can see would not take up any more space than already does by the globe.

Now this is not a discussion about also adding peoples own photo or avatar this is simply about replacing the globe for an immediate reference point of where someone resides in the world, adding personal avatars would only take up unnecessary space and clutter the forums.

your views no doubt will be noted by the powers that be so make your opinions known or forever "keep your mouth Shut".

Seriously though, makes sense, even if it was just text only.

i'd look good in a keegan perm well would of thirty years ago hehe


been trying to explain this since the dogs went home but thought it would look and make more sense if shown graphically also the font would naturally be the same as the rest of the site, now how quick is that for a quick reference of where someone lives in the world. don't know about you but i'm always intersted in someone elses culture and try to respect it when i can and this would immediately help

I'm with you on this Tayla, you have my vote on this. It's one thing that lets this forum down

Who want's to click and the blue globe thing to find out where a user is. It's clearly this way, and it makes it more personal.

Surely it's not that hard to do.

started doing a re install yesterday of the home pc and it screwed up, the disc is damaged and now i'm in limbo waiting for a replacement to finish off the remaining 8% of the re install, just using the back up lappy so i can use the net, so no giga for now, will let you know as soon as the big un' is back on line

I agree on this user location thingy.. maybe can do something as in numark forum where the user can put his location??
 
hi spinna how ya doing,

have'nt seen the numark forum but i was thinking along the lines of :- in members profile section you just drag and drop from a map board or use a pre requiste number for your flag to the relevant box and fill in two more boxs for country and region, simple as that job done.

apparently this functionality has been planed for a long time and is in testing.

 

Teamers can already see the location, but thats by IP and not 100% accurate, but migth use if for the public.

But it might be better if the users could input their location at their profiles.

Anyways, its a great idea, will talk to the team

@ Sky, great, because i've been prompting this for a long time, a year to be exact.

@ Norway, that would be brilliant, i think a lot more users may then show there locations if a simplified system were in place maybes something along the lines what i suggested above (9 posts down from top) if that were possible, nice and simple, anything really, it will just be great to see the forums festooned with all the flags of the VDJ community and everyone else prospective purchasers and competitors alike will see at a glance what a worldwide family we are.

my location is incorrect.

ive just noticed.. i dont live near Sheffield, i live 20 mins drive from Manchester.. lol
 

Yeah, but thats a GOOGLE feature (Google map) that we use... (and you can correct the coordinates in your profile).
The Google map is for sure not 100% accurate ;)

But as a user forum system, it would be best to do 1 of 2

1) Users themselves can input their country in their profile manually

2) By IP for auto dedection, if the user allows in in their profile ( the "danger" of this is that its live, so if a person is in a different country, holidays or travel, it will be reveiled, and might not be what a user want)

So I guess nr 1 would be best, even though the risk is "abuse" where goofballs just input fake country placement, like Bahamas, North Pole or what else ;)
 
they might try to put that they live on the MOON !! lol

showing that theyre on holiday might be good if youre in Ibiza..

but if someone is looking to rob your house, they will instanly know that you're away!!! (not good)

ive looked again in my profile and i can change which country im in, and choose if i want to be shown on the map..
but i dont see where i can put my home town.
 
rickmp3 is the man you need I had the same problem he will send you to a site so that you can get your latitude an long so that your location can be updated.

i think this should be as accurate as possible so that we can recomend DJs to people looking to make bookings, etc.
and if we could put on the map wether indeed we are mobile and availble for hire or not, that would be great.
