Hey guys.
Im currently a Junior in high school, and im looking at getting into DJing. Im currently the head of all of sound (like in school theater's, 36 channel yamaha what i normally work on) for my school district, so i know a fair amount about sound and such, and i want to get started. Im thinking this will be a great job for college, cause tons of parties. Im investing in either a Hercules DJ console MK2 or a Numark Totalcontrol, so i can do everything from my computer. What do u guys suggest for getting started?

What i mean is like, suggested music, or where to get it (i love love love techno, but not everyone does, lol) how to get known, what to do at a gig, and in short, to what extent should i be mixing? Should i constantly be playing 2 tracks at a time, or fade one into the other?

I personally would go with the hercules because it's an all in one system while others would probably say Numark because it's a better product ( arguemenative ). For someone who wants to load and go venture into DJing. Why not start with the simplest. As far as Djing and getting gigs. I'm sure theres alot of house parties. The only thing is that you have to have a set of good speakers. On the cheapest idea I can come up with is a good set of computer speaker with sub. Their not going to blow people away for sound. They will however cover the small room in the house that your entertaining. Remember your doing most of the house parties for free anyway and trying to gain experience. PLUS- most house parties are no-no's anyway so you have to be ready to pack up in case the police knock on the door or if things get out of control. C'mon we all been to those types of parties.
If you have a little bit of cash to spend then I would suggest on getting some powered speakers. I wouldn't worry about cable hookups because their are cable adapters for converting 1/4 to rca for an example.
Music - there are many ways to get music but if you want to stay legal. invest in about 50.00 and download your circles top tunes from the past 2-3 years. You can always fill in the gaps later. I would suggest top 40 and hip hop unless your going to play to specialty group like country or techno. I'm sure your going to be very creative in this subject so no worries will be had..LOL
Now if your going to be doing this for money later like private specialty parties. Then I would invest in party songs of each decade. Theres plenty of topics in the forums.
AND ABOVE ALL ELSE... HAVE A PURCHASED COPY OF VDJ... YOU DON'T WANT TO BE AT SHOW AND THE PIRATED SOFTWARE STARTS DOING WIERD THINGS AND MAKING STRANGE NOISES AFTER WHILE.
So both controllers will allow you to get started with VDJ or CUE but remember they are only limited editions. I played many months on the limited edition before going PRO EDITION.

Just to give you my input.
From what i can remember getting started 13 yrs ago was great, not much money, not much equipment, and very limited supply of music. So the challenge was to be as creative as posible using the limited resources.
My advice to you is dont get greedy too fast, your time to get to the big leagues will come, but when you get there it will be a J to the O to the B! Djing is still fun, but not as much, there is more at steak, you are running the show/business.
1- Learn to mix by ear!! That will separate you from the new generation of people who let the computer do all the work.
2-Always stay legal, i know it costs a lot of money, but if this is a profession you want to get into its a must, your reputation will speak louder than a sample mix tape you hand out at parties.
3-Also, network as much as you can, dont be afraid to say "im starting out" people will give you a shot, even if you have to start out at house parties for free eventually you will build a client base.
4-Practice, practice, practice, even djing veterans screw up here and there, its not something you get to the top and all of a sudden and you know everything, you never stop learning.

Just a quick side note. There are very easy ways to legally download music for free. Like using audacity on streaming audio. I currently have something very similar to vdj, and im planning on purchasing the real thing, but i want to wait until i get the controller

That is one of the best pieces advice someone can give you, Learn to mix by listening to the music, not what you can see on the screen.
Also take advice onboard, and don't be ashamed to asks question, I still do and I've been spinnin for 12 years now.

Ok i have a question. What do u mean mix by ear? I have an idea what u mean, but it could mean a couple of things?
Also to what extent should a dj be mixing? Should they just be playing songs, and just switching when one ends, and the other begins, or should i be looping things, scratching, etc

Learn to match the beat and key from song one to the beat and key of song two, by ear. It's not just how, but when. This will take some time, because you also need to know you music.

You will either copy someone else's style or get your own. You do need to know the fundamentals, so listen to different DJ. See what they do, and then develop your own style. It just like any artist, they all paint, but there interpretation is different.

Mixing by ear means that you do not let the computer match beats (bpm) for you.
This means that you will have to spend hours practicing with sliders so that when you fade from one disc to the other you are on beat, so it sounds like one continuos song, with no awkward double beats. example when fading from one disc to the other you want to hear:
[bump bump bump bump] you dont want to hear:
[babump babump babump babump]
Once you master that, you can move on to trying to match the key that songs are played in. it takes time, you will never stop learning.....
