I use SmartRipper to rip all my Promo Only DVDs onto a PC. It works great most of the time, except for the following DVDs on which the last chapter will not rip. This only happen on "Hot Video June 2004 Chapter 55, HotVideo August 2004 Chapter 59 and Hot Video May 2006 Chapter 52". When I rip the whole DVD it rips every chapter except the last one on those DVDs. When I try to rip just that chapter the START button will not appear in Smartripper. When I play these DVDs on a player, the chapter plays correctly without any problem. There is one other difference between these DVDs and all other Promo Only DVDs I own (and I own 100s)... On all other DVDs the music chapters appear under "Program Chain 1". On these three DVDs, the music appears under "Program Chain 4". Any help figuring out why Smart Ripper won't rip these songs would be extremely appreciated. Thanks!

Hey, while you guys are on the subject maybe you can help me. I am using Intervideo DVD Copy5 to rip my Promo Only DVDs to hard drive and it is taking around 2 hours each on my Dell inspiron 9400 with real good specs. I just got VDJ so I have to do my whole collection of HVC, Hot video, and Urban Video so it will take forever. Is one program faster than any other? Also I am ripping them as AVI or MPEG (take about the same time). Thanks!

You can also use DVD Shrink ! But there is chapter by chapter editing necessary. No automation.

Do you rip your DVD's into their own individual folder or do you rip them all into one and change the file name?

I try to keep my folder limited to about 15 .VOB clips for easy searching. I use DVD decrypter and it may take me about 30 minutes to rip 10 songs and rename them. I think once you get used to it things become a who lot faster.

I put each disc into a seperate folder for easyer searching but I do the whole disc (about 50 videos per). Guess that is why it takes 2 hours per disk.

Regarding slow Promo Only DVD rips with Smartripper:
1. Make sure your DVD drive is set for DMA (not PIO mode)
2. Make sure your DVD drive can speed read DVD-Video discs (some can't; some you have to take extra steps first. Nero Drive Speed tool can help).
The fastest drives can only read dual-layered, pressed DVD's at 5x-12x (CAV). That means that the DVD spins at the same speed during the read, but the data comes in faster as the laser is closer to the outer portions of the disc. Under optimal circumstances, an 8GB DVD can be read in about 15 minutes. My experience is many drives will sometimes slow down to 2x CLV (data rate is constant, disc speed variable) when reading the 2nd layer (i.e., second half) of Promo Only DVD's. Same thing can happen if the DVD is dirty. I don't know if this is indicative of a manufacturing/quality problem in PO DVD's or just par for the course. In any case, DVD's only need be manufactured to be readable at 2x per book standards.

I've been searching through hoping to find an easy answer but have not.
I just purchased about 50 Various DVD's to kick off video mixing. Most of the DVDs I purchased "lump" two are three songs per .vob file. When I rip them, using DVDdecrypter, I get one file with three songs in it. I'm hoping I don't have to manually edit them to separate into three files with the individual videos...do I?
Another noobie question is do all the other files that appear on the DVD matter for anything? I'm guessing it's stuff like menu information.
Thanks for your help.
