Has the ban effected anyone? in anyway?
As soon as it came out the numbers halved at my venue n i pay myself a percentage of the bar takings so i'm felling it now as it's not picked up yet, i know it's dead anyway at this time been the run up to xmas n all but it has caused a classic knock on effect for me. Firstly the numbers halved over night and then those that did still come out said that the atmosphere was not the same so they stopped coming out as well i had 12 people in on sat night it was a nightmare.
In my area there are two really good DJ's currently out of work due to the landlord's going bankrupt and i noticed that there were a few pub that had closed also as i was driving around.
So the original question...

Can't speak as a European but when the ban hit here in my area, the numbers dropped a little but didn't last very long. I think smokers are used to having to go outside for their piece of mind. Think about this, where are they going to? isn't the ban everywhere? they still have to go out.

They did that last summer here in Colorado and the numbers did dip for a few weeks but it has become part of life. More cig butts on the sidewalks but people have adapted.

What is that about? In Italy smoking inside public places is denied since January 2005. I felt bad when I was in Bayern Muchen last year, because my school mates were smoking inside the hotel. I think this rule makes us feel better when we're in a public place!

Charlie wilson, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Remember, it affect every establishment so the people are not going to go out of their way just to smoke. They will come back in a short time, especially if your bar is a nice place to be.
The ban went in affect for a reason, the higher number non smokers complained and bitched.
I know glenwood Springs very well. A matter of fact I got 2 speeding tickets there on my way to aspen. Beware, I coming back up there next season...LOL

I was speaking to the bar manager where I play at weekends a couple of weeks ago about this subject and he was telling me that the bar takings are down 27% on this time last year. But he said their slowly coming back up to a acceptable level.
I said to him, it's because you hired me, that's why it's picking up again, we both had a laugh at that.

Well Jimmy, If business doesn't pick up since they hired you. They can always put you in a G string with a tray full of shots... Think about all the woman that would attend then. You'll be a star.... you gotta use your imagination overthere. Take one for the team.

so if the goody two-shoes health nazi's get there way we'll be sipping non-alcoholic drinks in a bar with no smoke, no bright lights, no loud music, and no fun.
when the ban went into effect in Austin TX they drove an hour or more up here so they could smoke and not get a ticket. plenty of business our way because of it and plenty of peoples dollars leaving Austin to come to us.
and since i chain smoke at work...

there has been a smoking ban here in New Zealand for a couple of years now - and things didnt change much at all. at first there were the occasional complaint but it seems to have improved the number of people that are now going out. i know i never went out because of the smoke and i dont think i would be able to work in an environment like that. i know of some djs who do smoke and it annoyed them that they have to go outside to smoke during their set - but now they like it. i means they get out and get some 'fresh air"!

What i have noticed here in the Uk since the smoking ban is the smell .
Before in the clubs a lot of people used to smoke and i am an occasional smoker myself , when i am working and having a drink i do like a cigarette.
The cigarette smell used to cover all the horrible smells that you get with a large crowd , perspiration etc. , i mean when you got a crowd of say 500 it only takes a small percentage to fart and man you are in trouble !
I have definately noticed this more since the smoking ban, and i have been working in clubs for 15 years now .

Smoking ban is the most obvious solution cause of the negative effects on healh, working environment and the guests. In sweden the effects of the ban has been positive in any perspective you look on, but one - the other smells, as the previous writer mentioned. There are not so many solutions to that. I can however recommend adding a scented additive to the smoke machine - works kinda ok and are available in all sorts of flavours. :)

one other thing that i've noticed since the ban at some venues i work at is the management team have gone out of their way in which to help smokers have an enjoyable cigarette and try to hang onto there custom is to create courtyards, raised decking areas etc out of dead areas with heat and light, so what happens, yep your right, all the non smokers converge on that area and still twist their faces at people having a ciggy...selfish tawts

Here in seattle we've had the ban for a while now, and it's actually had a positive impact. More people are coming out because they know they won't smell like cancer at the end of the night! I think it's because we had a pretty low smoker percentage to begin with though.

We've had the ban in Edmonton for about 2 years. It hit the major citys first then rual areas. There was lots of talk about people just driving to where they allowed smoking but it never materialized.
People just kept coming back to where they were happpy hanging out.
The Club put in a smoking area (outdoors by law).
Previous to that there were glassed in smoking rooms in some Clubs and coffee shops. These rooms had HUGE air exchangers in them so even if you were a non smoker you could go in and relax.
Basically the same thing happend here as the rest of you.
People were pissed - stayed home and pouted for a few weeks, then shrugged they're shoulders and started going back out.

This happenend to me at a venue as well, same as Marcel above. Ask the owner to designate an outside smoking area...heaters if you need, and run some speakers out there. They will be back. The place that sets up the best outside smoking area will win.
