How good is VDJ, i have owned a copy since verison 1 i think or 2 cant remeber (like 3 yrs). Now im not an experienced Dj im more of a bedroom basher. I finally got around to purchasing a Mk2 Console (which i have working on mac and pc) and i havent found any probs with it, even with the software over the last number of years and if i ever had something i couldnt work out, that staff seem to answer me in a flash.
So thanks VDJ and its members, its sweet coming on here to read what everyone has written, knowing that i will get the assistance i need. I know i dont come here much but when i do its good.
So thanks

Virtual DJ is good, BUT If your a beginning DJ and you really don't know your music, I wouldn't recommend it, until they come out (which I thing is in the works) with a way to sepparete the genre and titles just like I-Tunes and MegaSeg (for Mac). You do have to know your music. and Titles..etc.

I beg to differ. A DJ SHOULD know his music. I have no use for genre at all. It makes no difference if you are a beginner, because you will be confused about all the genres, also. So you see, a different opinion, and I can highly recommend it.

That's the problem. Just because you can afford to buy the best equipment, and the latest music, does not mean you are a DJ. I have a different view of what makes a professional DJ. There are some guys that can only do one thing well. There are guys that play club music all night long, but would not know what to do at a corporate picnic. You can be the best scratcher out there, but do you want him at your wedding? What ever you do, you should know your music, and your crowd. I believe a DJ needs to be well rounded, and can play anything. I have my music separated, the way I want it. They are in the groups, that I put them in. If you don't know your music, having them in genre, is not going to help you. It just means you have a bunch of music separated, that you know nothing about. You can show up to an affair with the latest equipment, and have every song ever made, but does that make you a DJ? If you do not know what to play, and when, you are useless. I believe a professional DJ is like a Delta Force member. You can drop me into any situation, and I can perform. There are no surprises. Your love one just got back from Iraq, I have at least 3 versions of every armed forces anthem. Do you know the difference between a foxtrot and a jitterbug. Not every Frank Sinatra record, was a hit, and I only have 101. What about doing a Cuban and Jewish wedding, and everyone in the room is against the marriage. Thank goodness for alcohol, and a DJ that knew what to do. You can buy equipment and music in a day, but you can't buy knowledge and experience. Unless you hire me.
My point; it is far better to know the music, then to know what genre it is. Especially, since it can be cross genre.

I agree with AMAHM -
If you try hiring and training employees. It would be quickly found out if the person would be a good DJ for your company or not... they could have a great personality but little knowledge of music OR have knowledge of music but not for the events being performed.
A hip hop dj may not perform well at a top 40 club or vice versa.
So I think the real question is it better to be good DJ for one style or an Entertainer that can do multiple styles.
I think it depends on the individual and his goals for being a DJ.

Well said my DJ brother, to call oneself a true DJ you need to put in the time to learn the craft. At this point in time anyone can spend around $1100.00 USD and take out an ad proclaiming being in the busines of DJing. But that does not make you a DJ. Effort, equipment, music and desire put you in the ballpark, but it doesnt mean you playing the game.

Am Man and his Music -- I COMPLETELY AGREE with everything you said. What does it take for someone to grasp the knowledge of music? When I mean Genre can help ... I mean it can help (but very little... but it does help) if people start coming up and ask "hey can you play some 80s??" ... lol Yes I know there are tons of 80s, but at least the DJ will get the year of the music right.. lol
and you answered my question with the right answer, so you are a GREAT DJ ... I believe when your asked What kind of music do you play/mix/dj ... and they say EVERYTHING ... that makes a GREAT DJ.
What also makes an EVEN BETTER DJ (a TRUE DJ) Mixing everything and BY EAR...Not by AutoBpm Software. I know both. That's why I said in another forum for beginners... It is good to practice mixing by ear and not always count on AutoBpm Software (even the ones that are on CD Players.
---------> When ALcOhOL kicks in, that's when the party is the most fun. I did a 60 yr old birthday party and they drank, I didn't know people of that age can move like that lol.

Any direct drive turntable should do. Some have a lot of bells and whistles, so do some research, and decide what you will need.

I think you guys have the wrong concept of DJ.
A DJ is someone who basically plays music to an audience. Equipment shouldnt be the telling factor.
An 'GOOD DJ' knows his music.
An 'GREAT DJ' knows his music & knows how to beat mix.
An 'EXCELLENT DJ' knows his music, know to beat mix & knows how to scratch.
An "AWESOME DJ" is all of the above with beat juggling.
Quit with the comparisons, DJ's all play music :D

All great skills for a club, hip hop, and RnB DJ. These skills can be learned, and perfected in a short amount of time. The is quite evident even in this forum. I know guys that have never been out of their bedroom, that possess these skills. What I want to know is, how deep is your knowledge of music. Hip hop, club and RnB, represent a very small part of the musical puzzle. If that is the only audience you are playing for, that's fine. I can actually do a great party, and not play any of that. Ever do an 80th birthday party, with all Polkas and Obereks? I kid you not, some of these people were in wheel chairs and walkers. Now, I do their Polish festival ever year. I don't care who is in the party, I will have something for them. I even have Punjab remixes, that I play in the club. I know some of us just want to play the latest stuff, but that is very boring to me. Mix a Tarantella, into a Polka, and into an Irish jig, then I'm impressed. I can hear a hip hop mix at any corner bar. Now if you can beat mix some Nickelback, Mudvayne, and some Evanescence in with the hip hop, you have my attention.

Let's make this plain and simple.... and put an end to this once and for all ... We Have ALL DJed a party (any type) and have gotten the crowed moving and even earned a tip. If you have done that, then (which im sure we all have) we are ALL great DJs!

Great topic.
I recently visited the local saw mill here in town to get a beam for a project I'm working on here at home. When I first pulled up to the building on the outside it looked like a shack. I even wondered if I was in the right place. There were piles of raw wood outside so I figured I was. Once I stepped in the door I was amazed to see all the high tech machines they had in there. I spoke with the owner who told me they had been a family business since 1890. Just about every machine I saw had some form of computer hooked up to it. They had would looked like an special c&c machine designed to cut and shape wood, and a waterjet machine as well. Back to the chat I had with the owner, I asked him why they didn't do things the old way his reply was. Just because our trade is an old one doesn't mean our tools have to be. He went on to say that less then 5% of the work they do there is done by hand.
We don't walk to work anymore either even though most of us can, we'd rather drive.
This point is always brought up about using software is cheating and using software to aid your performance is cheating. Well if you want to live in the past then go get your horse. Because the year is 2007 and if your not using software then you are a part of the past. Ever notice how the people that say this is cheating seem to never make it out of the bedroom dj status? For those of us out in the real world its not cheating its a necessity. At this is our tool of choice
What makes a good DJ depends on the situation the DJ is in. I'm sure you wouldn't want a turntableist at your company party or a wedding dj at the club. There are many types and places for dj. Yes ever the just push play ones have theirs.
So basically What makes a great DJ is pure and simple adaptability in any given situation.

Well put Cyder!! I can classify myself kinda as a button pusher whether it be the keyboard or my 2 midi controllers. I can tell you that most of the work I do is with the music. I am tryin to get the 7 bowling centers all on VDJ with videos. Now with that said, I cant scratch worth a shit, but I know what to play and when. I am all over the charts from the 70's to todays music. I see what a real button pusher is and that is the guy I have on the weekends. I shit you not all he does is make a playlist and puts it on autoplay and just adds songs to that list. He never touches the transitions or anything which drives me nuts, but in the business we are in it all boils down to the numbers and our 42 lane center is full house Fridays and Saturdays from 10-2. The people that come are there to bowl and dance they dont give a crap about scratching or anything else. Now what pisses me off is the fact that I am the type of guy that likes to mix it up. If I walk into there on a Friday or Saturday and fill in I get "Where is all the rap". Now look out at the rest and they are dancing to the old stuff. My point here is it doesnt matter what you play it is how you play and mix the stuff. I kinda go on the 3 song rule. I will do 3 songs of a genre and mix into a different genre. I don't know if I am wrong, but I can beatmix into anything. I want to learn how to scratch and am playing with it, but I am more interested in a beatmatched smooth video show.
