Aside from Numark Total Control controller is based on and compatible completely with VDJ software, my question is, Based on features , size and price, not just past hardware problems..

What controller stands out???
Behringer BCD3000
OR
Numark Total Control
OR
MK2 with sound card

Hercules MK2 and Numark TotalControl are both "made for" VDJ, so they are ready to go;)

BCD3000 does not have native mapping in VDJ (yet), and seems noone have tried it yet with VDJ either, so maybe not a safe choice.

Other controllers to consider is the Vestax VCI-100

But is the Vestax worth £110 more, + the price of VDJ if you dont already have it? For me personally, I dont think so, but it might be for those who want to use it pro, or serious hobbiests.

Hercules MK2 Strengths and unique attributes on the Vestax:

Very Cheap (compared to Vestax/most simular solutions)
Great quality (considering the price)
Decent onboard soundcard (with outputs & Inputs)
Natively Supported
Includes Virtual DJ Home Edition
Small, portable, light-weight.

Overall:
Bargain price for the DJ on a budget, Controller + Mixer + Soundcard + VDJ Home in one box, all you need to start DJ'ing, very usable as a controller and soundcard even in the most professional setting, proved to be reliable and fairly robust. Weak when using it for its mixing functions (without an external mixer). Due to the price, it lacks the design, size and build quality that most Pro DJ's are accustomed to.

Vestax Strengths on the Hercules MK2/BCD2000

Touch sensitive Jog wheels (allowing basic-intermediate scratching)
More mappable functions/greater parameter control (effects/samples etc)
Far greater as a mixer.
More Robust/Quality build, Heavy-weight, Long lasting
Looks much more professional, created by the much respected "Vestax"

Overall: I've not used this, but I do believe this will be the controller of choice this year. It's got Pro written all over it, apart from those visible screws and lack of an onboard soundcard (but this is down to user preference and manufacturing costs). Some may argue it's pricey.

I still think the DAC-3 is an excellent choice with a good external USB soundcard. I've been using mine for a year now several times a week and it's still awesome.

Vestax is out of my price range.. I’d rather spend the cast on a controller and a good sound card than pay out that much….. Has anyone takin Total control for a spin??

My vote for Hercules MK2, I use it with external mixer and it is all I need, jogs are nice and very good for the price.
Total control will be something I would like to try since Numark is my favourite, they are inovators of fresh new things in DJ world.

DAC-3 is great, but so is Vestax, I think worth the extra money.

The important thing is giving your audience great music. Controllers are just tools to help us do our job.

IMHO the ranking is like this.#

Best of the lot No 1. Vinyl with SL1210s But vinyl too expensive and heavy for my sort of work (mobile) I've carried enough vinyl up too many stairs.

No 2 a very close thing to Vinyl. CD with CDJ1000 Mk 3 or otherwise. Awesomely easy to use and reliable and great buzz from using.

No 3 Virtual DJ with a good controller which you like and that suits your pocket. It doesn't matter as long as you can do your job with them.

I'm not using no 1 any more because I couldn't possibly carry all the vinyl I have.

I use No 2 for medium/large gigs. Great image, sound and usability. Also take VDJ and laptop so as to have some of those unusual tracks, even though with 30 mp3 CDs I have most of what I need.

My light solution at the moment is Vestax VCI-100 and VDJ with a couple of Mackies.

Fits in my boot (trunk) and does the job. The Vestax is the closest thing to the CDJ1000s at the moment, but still not as intuitively usable. But then it's nowhere near the cost.

Another couple of years will make a massive difference, when major manufacturers launch mp3 solutions with lclose to laptop size screens. Or when Pioneer make CDJ1000s with usb sockets??????? and maybe a slightly bigger display.

I'll give it another year or two but in the meantime as a gear junkie I'm enjoying the Vextax. I think they are an iconic product. (for now)

I agree with most of that, although I find Turntables a bit boring tbh, the best solution where scratching is concerned obviously, I still believe that the current technology is the best on offer, i.e CD decks like the CDJ1000/Denon/Numark, Software like VDJ/SSL and controllers like the Vestax and XP10.

The future is always where the best is when it comes to technology, when something that was once excellent becomes dated, designers strive to preserve the good and take it beyond previous limitations. That's why you wont see the platter/Jog wheel go out of date anytime soon, because the circular motion is the most natural way to sync music.

I’m not doing any scratching just mixing and karaoke.. The mk2 is too small and I have the mk1 so I’m familiar with it’s capability but find multi purpose button annoying… I don’t have any interest in in the adjustable jog wheel and I don’t understand the exposed screws design.. I interested in the options on the controller.. The two of them seem to have identical controls and I’m leaning towards Numark like mk1 and 2, being able to load a track without fumbling around with my mouse..

Hercules MK2 is much better than first one, you should try.

Yes the mk2 has bean improved internally but still I don’t like changing the setting from cue to fx to loop in order to access them.. Not a good feature for me..
Have any one seen the dimensions of total control.. I’ve searched the net to no avail..

hercules MK2 is a great controller i love mines :)

The icdx along with the nuo4 is the best by far :P

You have the point there, it is the pain in the *ss, but there is the mapper, you can assign it the way it suits you.

The Vestax is very good, much better than the IDJ mag and DJ mags understood. Both writers had difficulty separating the VCI-100 from the supplied software (Traktor LE) and also didn't use a low latency soundcard. The build quality is excellently good and it looks so good too, which is important for people who are in front of the public close up like mobile DJs.

I've had a few controllers, because I am interested in trying them.

I've tried the Faderfox which works really well too and is very compact, but isn't really very good with effects.

The x-session pro is OK, but again very limited in it's ability to trigger effect, etc.

The DAC-3 is another class act, but it is in 19" rack format, which doesn't suit everybody because it's wider than a standard laptop. It works really well with VDJ though.

The Vestax is very very nice, and the comments about the monitor buttons from idj mag are fatuous. The buttons they are talking about are fine for setting up monitoring volumes and monitor mix levels. Look at the picture here http://www.vestax.com/v/products/players/img/vci100_front_b.jpg

For monitoring of tracks and cuing you use the cue buttons for each channel, just like on any proper mixer. As I say, other comments were due to limitations of the traktor software.

Unfortunately this controller is going to be judged by it's strong links with Traktor, which is a good program but not imho anyway near as good as VDJ. I can't wait to map it to VDJ if I ever get the time. My day job is getting so busy and I'm too busy playing music at nights to spend time in front of the midi map dialogue of VDJ. Maybe there will be native support soon?????

I see myself using the Vestax for at least a couple of years, though, because it is very nice.

Glad to hear your positive review, I'm really liking this. I agree that those Mag reviews were wrong in judging the controller on its compatability with Traktor, but what do they know? they haven't even acknowledged that VDJ exists because of their ties with PCDJ.

Yeah, these writers should try VDJ.

I reallly stands out in my view

monitor buttons.. WOW.. I wasn’t aware that VCI-100 had this capability..
I’ve had lock ups with VDJ so many dam time when I want to listen to the track in cue without throwing it into a player.. Is there a fix to this happening,????
And will this monitor future create the same problem..

Anyone have the detentions of Numark Total Control..
