Hi all,
I'm pretty new to DJing and have a question. I've heard the advice that you shouldn't mix with both tracks playing through the headphones and that it's better to mix with one track playing on the headphones, while having one ear open to hear the other live sound playing through the monitor speakers.
Is there any particular reason for this? I find that I'm starting to do it both ways. When I'm first cueing up a track and getting a rough beatmatch, I'll use one headphone. But I find that when the BPMs are really close I can match the songs up better when they're both playing through the headphones, since I can hear the slight timing differences between the two songs better. Then when it comes time to fade it into the live sound, I'll take one (or sometimes both) headphones off and do it that way.
Just curious if there's any particular reason for preferring mixing with only one headphone, or if it's just a matter of personal taste. If I'm learning a bad habit for some reason, I'd rather break it while it's still early :)

The Idea is that you listen to the loud playing track in one ear, the cued track in the other and then match them up before your crossfade/scratch whatever.
Personally I just found it easier to mix this way before using VDJ. But I've done it both ways using the PFL mix Crossfader on my mixer and using the one ear method, both with good results.
Another way is to have a smaller speaker dircetly in the booth so that you can listen to the Pre-mix and the loudspeakers at the same time.
So to answer your question......
Doesn't matter.
Learn whatever way you want. As long as you can make beatmatch/scratch/crossfade/slam/mash transitions sound good.
As long as it sounds good in the mains, It doesn;t matter how it got there.

to answer the first question... keep in mind that what sounds good in the headphones might sound terrible through the mains. Once I know beats are matched, I keep one ear open for a "reality check" as I mix.
