i was just talking with someone who bought the mk2 and he tells me the MK2 doesn't work with any other VDJ versions except the one provided.
any thoughts? anyone else finding the same happened with themselves?

Not true, so far I've run 3.4 (home & then pro), 4.0, 4.1 and now 4.1r2 and the mk2 has worked on all of them.
However, the provided software only works with the mk2;^]
