Here is a good link that covers that period. We had a debate on VDJ radio the other night about when the disco period actually ended. It's funny to me that I'm actually a fan of alot of the music that came out in 82-85...the period Disco was taking it's last breath lol.

Well, for me the DISCO sound died in 1981... some people still doing some Disco at 1982, but for me in 1981 starts more dance music that looks for a cool dance tunes without the classic disco sound. For me classic Disco Tunes are like the Tramps - Disco Inferno or Gonzalez - I haven't stop dancin'... and the dance music I'm taking about is like BBQE, DTrain and other like that not really classic disco sound. Boys Town Gang - Can't take my eyes off you is the last song that could be more like disco.

I like this disco songs from the 70's:

The Tramps - Disco Inferno (1978)
Sylvester - You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real) (1978)
Carrie Lucas - Keep Smilin' (1977)
Donna Summer - I Feel Love (Extended Version) (1977)
Gibson Brothers - Que Sera Mi Vida (If You Should Go) (1979)
Voyage - Souvenirs (1978)
Dan Hartman - Vertigo-Relight My Fire (1979)
Cameo - Find My Way (1978)
Bryan Adams - Late Me Take You Dancing (1979)

Also Village People and many others...

I agree with you ACW...but what would you call something like D-Train..and the others on my list. I had a debate with someone. They were calling it Disco and I didn't have a name to come back with. Freestyle was the next big genre (house and rap too). Stuff like the Cover Girls-Show me, TKA-One Way Love, Stevie B.-Spring Love. It seems the D-Train, BBQE and others don't really have a name. They are from the 83-85 type time period....

djej,

BBQE was from late 82 and I called dance music that genre in that days. I know that many music is "dance" music, but it's the way to change the DISCO name. I remember that in the radio also that's the way to refer to them. Disco Music left a big hole in the dance floor, but the sound goes to his ends and many groups want to have a different sound. D-Train was a transition (some funk in there), that music (begin of 1982) really don't have success and by September of 1982 music style like BBQE was the way to go. In that days really don't be a defined style (dance music, break music, rock, rap) Some producers like Boby Orlando and Patrick Cowley change that dance and begin with High Energy style which is the "dance music" from 83 to 86, but the "dance music" style defined as the sounds hear in BBQE, Carol Jiani, and others were the sounds in the dance floor for many years.

Typically Disco Music go from 120 to 144 BPM but the classic sound of Disco are from 132 to 136, in the same way "Dance music" is in 120-130 BPM, High Energy from 133 to 140 (I remember songs in 150BPMs).

Well bigtonyt, I think you summed it up pretty good. But what ever happened to

Patrick Hernandez - Born to be Alive 12'
Claudja Barry - Boogie Woogie Dancing Shoes 12'
Baltimora - Tarzan Boy - 12'
Bananarama - Venus - 12'
Billy Ocean - Loverboy - 12'
Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On Earth - 12'
Divine - You Think Your A Man - 12'
Dead or Alive - You spin me Round - 12'
Dead or Alive - Lover come back to me - 12
Dead or Alive - Brand New Lover - 12'
Dead or Alive - Lover Come Back to Me - 12'
Miami Sound Machine - Conga - 12'
Michael Jackson - Billy Jean - 12'
Michael Jackson - Dont Stop Till You Get Enough - 12'
Michael Jackson - Shake Your Body Down To The Ground - 12'
Michael Jackson - Thriller - 12' RMX
Michael Zager Band - Let's All Chant - 12'
Shalamar - Dancing In The Sheets (Extended)
Shannon - Let the Music Play - 12'
Sister Sledge - We Are Family - 12'
Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight - 12'
Sylvester - Mighty Real - 12'
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance With Somebody [Flip 'N' Fill Mix] - 12'
Wang Chung - Everybody Have Fun Tonight (Extended Mix)
Wang Chung - Dance Hall Days - 12'

Now I know a lot of these do not fit the "Disco" thing but they always seemed to keep the floor moving, and or brought more people to the floor. "Disco" has never died, it just went underground. Anything with a strong dance beat is disco in my opinion.

Bottom line here for me is that one heck of a lot of good dance tunes are mentioned in this post, and if we ever have to do a disco dance we will know where to come to get out song list. LOL

I am a member of Mastermix - if you go to http://www.mastermixdj.com (you may need to register, if you haven't done so already), you can check out what they have.

Thanks to them, I now have all the Number Ones from 1953 to 2000-and something (up to Crazy Right Now by Beyonce, anyway - but more albums are available from them) - also there are some CDs containing rare recordings available in the Classic Cuts collection.

Cheque's in the post!

to my ears 80s funk is very similar to 70s disco, take a look at this list and see if you agree?
