Serato for iOS - but 149 dollars?! 😮

OK the basic version is free, but to fully unlock....

thats not that bad honestly. Ive spent more on a lot dumber stuff, trust me LMAO!!

Looks pretty decent to be fair. A pub DJ could just rock up with their phone and a DJ2GO and off they go...... No laptop required.

Great idea until your phone rings, that never happens on a Friday night does it...

Guess you'd just put it on silent mode if working .....

Or use an ipad.

@locodog I had mentioned all of that to others too (there are actual issues on Algoridim forums opened for those cases lol because it seems Silent mode initially wasn't enough)

I still think people are still looking for the right solution (better portability) in the wrong option, because you still have essentially an underpowered laptop, with less input options, as opposed to a standalone which just needs a USB stick.
Apple loves this though, because they get to sell twice as many devices to DJs.

The main problem still exists - what about the hardware?

When the hardware starts consistently supporting iOS, then we have a conversation, otherwise, it will suffer the same fate as all others.

The only positive I can really see from the move is if Serato is deciding to do this, then there is a chance that future hardware will be fully class compliant (Apple made no actual change in OS restrictions in that regard), which will make it even easier for Atomix to consider doing the work having a better return on investment - they already have a better ecosystem currently to work with the library in its distribution and cloud drive support.

Also, no love for Android (lol)?

There rarely is any Android love for music apps in general. There's way more iOS support, and always has been. When apps come out, it's inevitable all the Android users start posting and asking why it's not supported, or when the Android version will come out....

Some simple research before deciding which smartphone or tablet to buy, will make it clear which platform will suit your needs.

That is true, but as Algoridim and AlphaTheta have already proven, Android support is possible, it's just more care is needed in device selection/feature reduction.
The same argument could be used to tell users to buy a Windows tablet that is Intel Based (which supports all controllers and potentially all features), but they will still argue about using an iPad and how much better it is, even though for the use case, it actually isn't.

I would never buy Apple anyway, and the recent price increases make their gear even more ridiculously expensive, especially for the higher storage SKUs.

Well it looks like it can be used with the supported controllers without having to buy it, so that's a plus.

Seems I can use it with my Prime 4 (pointless? 🤷‍♂️) and DDJ-SX2, but not with my little Reloop Mixtour or DJ2GO, which would have made more sense size wise.

Times are changing Technology is changing, And using a laptop to be a Dj is changing. Standalone and phones are the future. The new iPhone Duo ... I can't wait to run djay on it. I would rather use vdj any day over other software , but when I can show up with my iPad and my akai amx and do a show just as well as I can with my MacBook Pro and a larger controller , it just makes sense . I've been asking for several years for an iOS version of vdj. The other thing to think about .... most of us posting in here are older seasoned djs, The next gen of Dj is not going to use a laptop. I'd compare it to the last gen of cd users who didn't want to switch to a laptop... you know the ones I'm talking about .... older and didn't want to change

But a phone is a computer, whether one thinks it is or not, and tbh it's currently a step backward on all counts except portability.

The standalone argument I can buy, because the aim was always to have access to your collection (and all it needs is a drive) and have the best ways to blend music (the device itself).

The reason why we use computers (phone or laptop) is because of the flexibility snd power it brings (e.g. custom mapping, realtime stems performance and other resource intensive applications), and in that regard it will always have a place.

Yes the phone is a computer, And a cd is music in a digital form. The laptop allows us to have thousands of songs in digital form in one place thus reducing the size of what we had to carry. The phone is a smaller computer, reducing the size of what we carry. AND...... everyone has a phone with access to music subscriptions . So everyone with an iPhone or iPad can have the smallest memory n phone and still have millions of songs to play Now the aspiring dj has one less purchase to make because they already have a phone . Sure there are those who will try and text or get calls , while playing live (that's not worth discussing). I think they priced the software right , and the monthly subscription includes pro. Download and try it, I don't like the way the crates are transferred over but it works well

To each there own - any DJ wholly dependent on streaming and a phone for playing gigs is a greater risk to the event that one who has local music and a dedicated machine.
DJing is a professional after all, if you want to take shortcuts that's cool, but it's all on you when the shortcut fails (streaming services go out, you can't take an emergency call).

I see the niche that it fills, but to me (personally), that need is better filled with a standalone (just a USB stick but can work as a controller) or a Windows tablet that is Intel based (supports all features and controllers - no asterix cases to talk about).

It's the same argument vinyl and cd djs had back in the early 2000s What if the computer freezes What ifs are everywhere, I started using a laptop to dj back in 2001 and every dj who first saw it had reservations. Within a couple years most were using laptops. I agree with you about streaming only djs but you and I both know there are a lot of them out there, again My opinion...... the future is stand alone and phone/ iPad .

It's honestly not even comparable, because the probability of failure is way larger - reliable internet is not a standard in most DJ booths today, the streaming service can go down at any time (see the recent Spotify outage and the number of people crying on forums about not being able to do gigs - you don't control the medium).

I see the future definitely being standalone.

iPhone/iPad is just computer use in disguise - there is no real innovation there, just shrinkage of the computer and removal of dedicated input components other than a screen.

What may happen is Apple may combine the OSes into one offering and just beef up the portable devices enough to be the new computer, where you can attach extras to get the rest if desired.

In relation to the general topic though, I'd encourage Atomix devs to aim for as much retention of features as possible, especially when it comes to management of the song database.

If external drives can be handled similarly to the laptop, cloud services offered similarly, and things like MIDI mapping and the vdjscript engine are retained and can be done anywhere (e.g. done on laptop and shows up on portable device and vice versa), you're already ahead of the curve in that regard.

Question...... Name the DJ software companies who don't have an iOS app or stand alone software .......

Answer - name the clubs and other venues - even bridezillas - that will toss a "dj" out on the street if he shows up trying to play a gig from a phone or ipad.
that's a much longer list. i wouldn't even let them in the door.
all this is going to do is a make it a nightmare for anyone going after those local gigs because some schlub is going to charge in the basement and show up with an ipad and garbage bluetooth speakers and keep giving the industry a black eye.
and yes, this IS worse than the crackheads showing up for a gig with vdj 7 and a walmart audio setup
