I want to set the eq's to kill on my DDJ1000 but when I change this in the mapping the knobs are unresponsive. How do I change the eq from hardware to vdj eq's?

I changed from eq_high to eq_kill_high and so on.

You're doing it wrong. If you read the description for those EQ kill verbs, you'll see they are for muting the EQ (i.e. they are on/off switches).
Leave the EQ mapping as it is, and change the equalizerFrequencySpread config setting to Full Kill.
