I assigned a custom on-screen knob as well as a real knob on my MIDI controller to 'sampler_volume_master'. This seems to function normally: Turning either the on-screen knob or the controller knob changes the overall output of all samples in the sampler. Also, if I turn the controller knob, the on-screen knob moves with it.
However I set another software knob as well as a real knob on my MIDI controller to 'sampler_volume'. This works but only for the first sample in the group, when it is supposed to affect whatever sample has 'focus'. Also when I turn the controller knob, the on-screen knob does not move. The MIDI assignments are SLIDER-18 and SLIDER-19 respectively.

It seems to be working as expected for me (if I understand you correctly)
This is how it works on my setup:

Use .. sampler_volume_nogroup , if you dont want to control all samples of the group at the same time.
