I came across a review of USB hubs here. Take a look, and make up your own mind. I decided to get the top rated Hoo Too, as I have had issues with a few. Here is what I think.
I use a lot of external hard drives. I have a few powered usb hubs, as they have not been able to actually do as they say. Like one I have has a problem when you used a fourth port, another kept rebooting or losing connection, while another did not like me using the charging port for my phone. I happen to come across a test comparing 15 powered usb hubs, on some website. Two of the ones that I had, were at the bottom of the report, and described the same problems that I had. This product was at the top, so I bought it. It cost a little more, but I can tell you now it was worth it. I have had 4 hard drives, a flash drive, and my phone charging without any issues. I have had this a little over a month, so I am writing this review.
As stated in the report, there are some issues with some Apple products, but other hubs work well with Mac. What works for me, may not work for you, so choose wisely.

Thanks for the info.
I've tried a few powered USB hubs (on PC), and they've all caused trouble - at least I thought it was them at the time
So currently I've changed my setup so I don't need a powered USB hub
But it would be great if one cound be found that just always works and doesn't cause weird drop-outs or flickering LED lights
Keep us posted!

When I get around to it, I will test with my Surface Pro 3. I do have the docking station for it, but it is a little awkward to carry. Their portable dock is way too expensive, but it does offer more options.
