hi guys.. can anyone explain me what's the best format for ripping and playing audio.. for example a cd..
i see that more of the software and hardware (pioneer cdj xdj) can read wave files..
i know that a cd is made by wave file.. so i want to rip in wave.. but there's the problem that not all software write or reads wave tag..
why do i want to rip in wave?
because i think is the best and loseless format.. and because today the memory in commerce, processors, software and hardware are more powerfull that 10 years ago.. i can use a 2tb hd with any pc and software, and any cdj xdj.. so why don't playing a high quality track???
i try to use some wave on vdj and cdj xdj.. and there's no problem.. but i found problem with tag!!!
any suggestion??

have a look into FLAC
 
.flac is losses and the way to go but wouldn't your portable drive give pretty slow transfer speeds, considering the file size?
 
I use AIFF which is Apples wav file that supports meta tagging. It is not as small as their other lossless format that is put into the MP4 container. Unfortunately, some other "big name" software does not support it. So, I am using the larger AIFF.
Kell that in mind when you pick a format. Flack is not supported by every software either. MP3 at a constant 320 bit is also a good format. Some people, like me, can hear or feel the difference when those are played vs lossless. I don't think you want to get into that debat. Google search lossy vs lossless and get some popcorn.

As far as an external drive, my lossless files are 20mb and up. They load quickly from USB 2, it's not a long delay. When I use USB3, it's not any different then from my internal.
 
I'm returning to mp3 cbr 320kb/s from flac because of my wish to use Recordbox for backup, small set performance, and possibly club work.
It's a backward step.
Pioneer are very good at restricting the usage of equipment, and software.

I'm now in a kind of stupid twilight world between the two formats.
Thanks for nothing Pioneer.
 
does converting mp3 to flac have any benefits
 
actually no it would only give u a larger file with the same content as the mp3

the encoding cant be any better then the source .....
 
lets hope mp3 at 320kb remains for some time to come then ;-)
 
VBR mp3 files are widespread, however they do not work well with software. I have bought many, perhaps they are a waste of money.

Flac from CD is the best option for archiving.
No quality loss, and meta data (tags) !

Microsofts wav files are larger than flac, and contain no meta data. Pioneer in their wisdom chose to support this inferior lossless offering.

+1 for VDJ which does support flac.

RekordBox and Traktor support AIFF which is lossless.

There are several lossless formats that support metadata tagging. AIFF is one of them, and it is supported in most software, unlike flac. For archiving, I would choose the format most supported that allows tagging.

I mostly use the free Linux for my computing needs.
This does not mean that the outstanding efforts made by the Atomix team should go unrewarded.
I believe their product could, and in the future will thrive in a free Linux operating system evioronment.

The thing is "the money men" would sell you the air you breathe if they could, and I suppose they will in the future.

I'm not going to go into the morals of business and ethics in this thread, except to say that debit credit, and money are not limited to the western world. That's not what this thread is for. The question was the best format for ripping and playing music.

As you can see from his original post, he wants to be able to use the files on as many formats ass possible. He also wants the ability to tag.
 
It would be easy for Pioneer to support the free file format flac. They instead choose to exclude, and marginalize this superb file format.
Essentially Pioneers decision attempts to steal the freedom of choice from our people.
Apple are also often guilty of the same crime.

The factors influencing the choice of a file format should reflect what is good for humanity.
Choosing a restrictive Apple format is most unwise.

Any decent company would seek to enhance its customers user experience.
I believe Atomix is such a company.
Hence they support flac.

It's companies like Atomix who are likely to have to pay to use proprietary file formats, and then pass the cost on to the customer. It's a kind of tax.


Note: Flac can be rapidly converted to high quality mp3, or even ogg. An ogg is the free equivalent of the mp3 which I believe still has restrictive patents.

You've been warned previously about all your anti corporation babble but you just don't give up .... do you?

It may be a surprise but Atomix are also a "corporate" company. Look them up on the web and you might be surprised to find they are not the small fish you think they are.
 
The OP asked about a file format that is supported by other software and equipment. He also wants to be able to tag the file.
He references Pioneer gear as some of that equipment, CDJ, XDJ, etc. those devices are supported by RekordBox.
RekordBox supports MP3' AIFF, WAV, and AAC.
For the greatest compatibility, I would choose MP3 at 320CBR
For high quality with comparability, AIFF. This file can be created with a large number of audio programs outside of iTunes and Apple.
Oh, and in 2011, Apple open sourced the codec for Apple Lossless. It doesn't sound like they are making much on those formats. Let's try to keep this thread on topic.
 
I wouldn't be worried about vendor lock in with aiff. The format is already 27 years old, and since no compression is involved it's an incredibly simple format.
Since it's lossless, there is also little risk for the future. It's always possible to convert to a different format if required.

If lossless is not a requirement I'd go for mp3 or aac, both are more than wide supported by now.
