Topic: 2 Radically different but successful nights

It's 3:30 in the morning, Just got home from my club gig and I'm still buzzed up from the night ...so I will blather on here. This weekend drove home something to me that has been written about and discussed ad nauseum on every DJ forum...read your audience!! This is especially important for a club DJ, no crowd, no revenue for the club. I just finished up the second of two Radically different but successful sets. Set 1last night started out a little slow, first group to hit the dance floor was a bunch of women in their 50's out for a birthday party...They ended being the core of my party all night and I basically played to them for the better part of my 4 hour set, 70's disco, some classic rock and 80's new wave...the "Vintage Chicks" had a ball, and stayed dancing untill almost closing time! The set tonight couldn't have been more different, It was a younger crowd, lots of women, and they ate up the current dance and hip-hop, It felt awesome, everything just clicked, track after track. Was it technically perfect...NO! I made a ton of mistakes, but I was playing the right songs, and having fun with the crowd. It goes to show sometimes HOW you play isn't as important as WHAT you play. You can have all the cool tricks down, but if you aren't playing the right stuff...you get the picture. I will publish both sets in my profile and you can see what I mean. Critique welcomed!

Peace,
Darren (DJ Big D)

It's always good to read about a Dj who's happy to share experiences from a set they've just done.
Forget the critique as some will or may get 'nit picky' about your choice which is not the point. The point is 'On The Day' you got it right on both nights which is all you want and the club manager/owner wants from the Dj too, yeah we all make mistakes but no one will truly notice unless they Dj themselves (and if they do they should just shut up coz it happens to all djs). The crowd you play to do not give a flying $&*# about tricks etc, all they want is music they can get their freak on to and you did it by reading the crowd correctly. In my eyes - Job Done and you probably felt you actually earned your pay especially when it goes that well.
Boom!

+1 to both of you.
It's very hard to find the "right song".
A song can go down great one night, yet the next may crash the dance-floor.
Timing, as well as song choice is critical.
A song has its moment in time !

Also you need to communicate with the audience, that does not necessarily mean talking on a microphone, but you must inject your life-force into the night. You may just smile, or dance, but you must do something to avoid being just a jukebox = boring.

Congrats for a successfull weekend.

I saved your Sunday's playlist into my cloudlists ;)
