Our goal is to help you mix better.

With VDJ7 yes!

With VDJ8 nope!

Just look at these forums now.

Also it seems WE all are VD8'S testers unless you are on the "inside" it seems sadly seems now :(

Thank you all for the help over the many years of "usable VDJ versions" for I and my crew and that was VDJ7 version 4.2 and beyond until 8 came around.

This will surely be deleted. :(

Users should be users and not VDJ8 beta testers, etc...

IMO.

What problems do you have exactly with vdj 8 then?

"This will surely be deleted. :("

It's unlikely, I'm the only one that gets deleted around here.
Anyway stop trying to move in on my territory lol.

You're entitled to your opinion.
I think VDJ8 is a fantastic upgrade.
There are still issues...but I could never go back to VDJ7.

Maybe this is a good starting point for debate.

Why are so many people still using version 7 and are adverse to using V8?

What V7 features are missing in V8 (if any), are people just scared to change?

There must be some reason. Personally I now prefer V8 and it is stable, but a lot of people don't like it at all. If I were Atomix I would be asking these questions to get an understanding of the customer base and what they really want, but of course most companies don't ask this as they often don't get the answers they are looking for!

TAO has been on the forum and a user for a long time (and I have been here since 2008). Maybe he could explain a bit more what his issues are as some of them may be very easy to address.

Thanks good sir but way too many to share here with our systems that are more beefy specs wise than recommend.

VDJ8 to little me should had been a workable version for all customers, mostly trouble free for all instead of trade show heavily tweeked systems just to gain more beta testing customers.

Thanks for your offer to help!

There might be too much to learn, I'm still ploughing through the manual.
Add a few bugs, and hardware configuration problems and the headaches grow.
I often have suspected that my problems were VDJ8 software bugs, only later to find they were features I did not understand.
Some of the default settings are not wise.

If you take the sampler for example, then a great deal of study can be invested. However this is not compulsory, and it can still be used like the simple VDJ7 equivalent. The editors, and things like POI offer unbelievable opportunities to be creative, but they again demand study.

Maybe Atomix should create a stripped down VD8 basic for those who seek the simple life.
I thought that's what VDJ7 did ?.

There's not really that much difference, many of the editors are hidden unless you look for them.

I think the change of default skin threw some people off, saying that I have only ever used custom skins so it wasn't an issue for me.

The omission of the extended browser in the default skin caused a bit of confusion at the time though.

I remember being horrified when VDJ8 automatically beat matched my music in front of a crowd without my noticing. It is hard to think logically under such circumstances. That of course was just a simple setting. Full kill on the eq's is something else I found tricky, it caused a fuss until I found the option in the settings. I mix using the eq's.
Then I had a few fights with the beat grids in the bpm editor.
It's different.

to carry on from there, yes it's different, yes it means that you have the chance to learn and develop, my mixing has changed for the better. I've been using vers8 since it came out, the few technical problems that I have had have been more often my fault that the that of the program.
practice and enjoy

@raypitman +1

Version 8 was supposed to be completely bug free on release. Remember all the PR guff about 2 years ago?

I guess Atomix were under pressure to get it out and the first few releases were alpha at best. It has got gradually better and I bet a lot of the reason for people sticking to V7 is that they had a horrible first experience. The transition between versions wasn't handled very well at all.

I would strongly suggest anyone still on V7 to give V8 another go because it is so much better now.

Would you mind sharing some of the issues you have had with 8?
I was very hesitant to switch over from a rock solid V7 to V8.
I don't have so much to report in terms of issues, mostly peanuts for me.
What scares me is, when *fundamental* stuff gets out of control in some betas, like total freeze or audio not syncing to beatgrids and so on.
Today I carry two "quite" identical systems with me, separate controllers and PC's to have a backup.
There are ways to ease the horrible feeling of live crashes in front of a big croud.
I guess I will always carry a backup-system, our customers deserve that extra weight to carry on their important party, weddings etc.

You don't have to install beta builds, that is still an option.

This is the point where you hear a big groan from the audience... yep it's me, again! and I hate it, it's even peeing me off and, I can't or won't say I'll not be writing the same stuff on another post in a few days or weeks time.

First off like everyone else I was excited when v8 was first released and extolled it's virtues to everyone on the forums at every given opportunity, played out live with it and was massively impressed with the new sound engine and as my show relies on video interaction with the crowd, I really thought I was on to a winner with the new video sampler, new functions had been added compared to the old clipbank, but hang on, what in the hell happened to the original clipbank, they removed a key part of what should have been the basis of building a great video sampler, yes I know this has partly been addressed some time later with the introduction of slideshow but there is little comparison to the original clipbank.

We not only lost clipbank but other plugins that were also part of the bigger picture when using the video output at our shows, all of these omissions that were once part and parcel of putting on a video show that was expected and stood us out from the crowd for our clients/venues and the audience have been deliberately axed and, you wonder why there are people still using v7, it's not that we don't want v8, we dearly would love to use v8 but in doing so we lose features that the clients would soon pull us up on.

Other things that you'll notice with v8 is the active video deck windows when playing audio only files are missing, again another feature that has been omitted that we have had throughout the history of this software, why is that, personally I use these windows as a reference point in which to see what deck to put my next track onto instead of having to twist my neck to look at the mixer, that for me that is the biggest pitfall of all the missing the parts in v8.

Since it's release, I've spoken privately with a few people in the upper loops (possibly like many others have also done,) and have put my ideas forward to them on what is needed just to get the video sampler up to speed, these conversations gave me genuine hope for the future of the video sampler, so after eighteen months of waiting and frustration you might now understand why I feel bitterly disappointed.

Please understand, it's not that we don't want to use v8, it's that we must continue to use v7 because there is no alternative to the features that we currently rely on.

I appear to be going into optimised lock down mode again.
That is..I stick with what works !
To hell with beta's, or upgrades.
That applies to both VDJ, and Windows.
I demand 100% reliability.
If I don't get it my system is modified.
The Win7 optimizing tool is once more back in fashion on my laptops.

When mine crashed the other day ( not live) i attached files to my ticket and was told to update my software and bios.
Either a lazy answer or something pointed them to my bios???
I felt it was "brushed under the carpet"

Must admit though now i,m more familiar with it i,m liking it more. Just not 100% confident with it live, with vdj7 never had a single crash in over 3 years.

Funny how it crashed on an optimised dedicated laptop, but won't crash on home pc that is stuffed full of cr**p and programs, and i,m really trying hard to get it to LOL

To the original OP, if you don't ask for help, then we can't help you. You still have not said what your issues are, so I guess this is just a rant, which is OK and will not be deleted. I have the same software as everyone else. So, how is it that it works for me and not you? Paul, you have some features that you liked in 7, that are now gone. These issues are major to you, and we have discussed them privately. I am not computer savvy, and don't know half of the stuff that you do. However, I am a very talented DJ, and that is being extremely modest. These issues have not hampered my shows one bit, and I have been using 8 since the beginning. I am a working DJ, minimum 3 nights a week, and like you all video. I missed the clipbank for a week, until I learned how to utilize the sampler (I told you I'm slow). After you explained the video preview window being blank when two audio files are playing, I got it. The reason I did not get it, was because it was not an issue for me. Usually by the time I'm ready to load another track, there is only one player playing. If two players are playing, I just look at the video crossfader, because I always use it even for audio. Sometimes I get confused which player is playing with two videos playing. It takes me the same amount of time to look at the video crossfader. We are all different, and these issues are showstoppers for you. I'm not trying to change you, or force you to use 8. I'm just giving a different point of view, as they are not showstoppers for me. I have no idea when or if these issues will be addressed, but you can keep asking as much you want. You have done a lot for this community, and have shown me and this forum the utmost respect, I believe I have shown you that same respect.

ROFL, Rick, stop being so coy, your modesty shines out like a beacon of light on a moonless fog filled night, it is a guide for us lost souls set adrift on a tide of despair, but, hey ho life goes on, the Popes in town and, maybe's with your help he will have a word with the big Kahuna and get things put right.

Oh, and thanks for those kind words, not just on this thread but others as well, they are much appreciated, another thing, it doesn't matter what the Pope says behind your back your still numero uno in my eyes.

Well my M.S. has worsen so doing computer tech stuff is out, etc...

My crew wishes to keep doing under my biz and most just know "plug and play".

So its been a great run of 25 years doing so for so long for me. :)

I love V8 and i think it has enourmus potential.
V7 was great though and i understand that many people still use it.
