Anyone who actually has some work is doing ok !
I didn't realize that the club DJ was facing the same kind of problems as the mobile.
Is this a UK thing, or worldwide ?

I don't know about the UK, but in Belgium I have a feeling there has been a huge rise in big one-time events, concerts and festivals over the last 10 years or so.
(Tomorrowland has grown out to be one of the most famous dance festivals in the world, but in summer time you can find relatively big events almost every weekend. The same can be said for indoor festivals.)
My guess is that as more people visit these festivals, of course less will go to night clubs.
For the dj's I think it just means that 'club' dj's become more mobile, going from event to event rather than being resident for a specific place.

Also in Belgium a lot of big nightclubs closed the last years. Mostly because of the local authority.
But it's not the end of the dj. I see also more and more work for dj's nowedays.
New trends:
- beachclubs during the holiday season (as in Holland)
- rockfestivals now have extra days with dj's, EDM has also a place on a rockfestival.
- Tomorrowland spin-off's
- Trendy party's once a month/year, sponsored by Martini, music stations,...
-dj's in trendy restaurants/bars (Antwerp, Bruxelles/Gand)

The death of the dj? what's about of the raves, the private parties, the small and big events, etc? The disco's is not the unique way to work as a dj.
I agree with the rest, in Spain you can see more big events, more beach parties and also the "revival" events for 80 & 90s music, I've participated in some and are very funny.
Additionally I think that now there's too many difference between famous and not famous dj earnings, it's aberrant the earnings of dj's like Steve Aoki (to say something...) for the work they did... (it's a personal opinnion)

Yeah, but the Council put them out of business because of persistent drug abuse, not lack of customers!
And as for Paris Hilton getting paid a fortune to do gigs, that is just taking the p!

Unfortunately I have been a victim of this. After 38 years as a nightclub DJ, the last 2/3 years has seen a massive decline in club culture in my area here in the North East of the UK. Another nightclub that I was resident at on a Saturday only a few years ago, I used to have it full to capacity with massive queues outside and it's now closed! Until a year ago I was a resident DJ for 8 years in a nightclub, 3 years ago I was working 3 nights per week and making a reasonable living, then the decline started and I ended up working only one night per week. We were operating from 10pm til 2am and the last few years we only had a handful of people until midnight and only filled up after that, but still, it was a fraction of the numbers from a few years ago. Being self employed and relying entirely on my DJing for income it became very difficult to survive.
Two things happened at the same time last year, firstly the owner of the nightclub had it taken off him by the brewery and secondly my mate had been trying to get me to work for him in a busy Hotel for several years. I took the opportunity to make the switch from club culture to doing weddings. Probably one of the best decisions I've made. Since last August I've done over 40 weddings and 26 Christmas parties, I have 30 weddings lined up til November and 18 Christmas parties to do this year. The Manager has told me that we have weddings booked up til August 2017.
I would estimate that in years gone by my hometown would have around 1500 to 2000 customers out on a Saturday night. Due to the culture change, at a guess, I would say there is a max of 400 to 600 customers now. Quite a dramatic change. Also, the so called DJs, are bedroom DJs working for peanuts (£40/50 for 6 hours!!!), pirate software and a few pirate tunes off the internet and you can be a "DJ" lol. I can't make a living there because of them. Glad I made the change.

The problem is that half the UK venues have gone, hence only half the DJ's are needed.
This applies to both mobile, and club work.

Anyway, I think that this is a temporal situation, you know how this works. Maybe after some years (maybe 5-10) people habits and trends will change again.
DjSoulman, I also think that you made a good change, the important is to continue earning your money to live, I also do weddings sometimes and it's not bad, it's nice to share some happy moments and to provide the music to this emotive moments, it's a different way to dj but in the end, it's a way to still being dj and playing music.
