The one I posted does have a back lite keyboard 👍 and I've seen them as low as 500 on eBay.

ASUS Q550LF-BBI7T07 - 15.6" - Core i7 4500U - Windows 8
Asus is a fine brand.
I like beatbreakers suggestion for a machine, I might even buy one, but It strains my imagination to view it as a cheap backup.
Whatever.
Note : Usually people in the UK do have to pay more for their equipment than those who live in the USA.
I'd be looking to spend around £150 on a cheap backup, the above machine retails at around £500 new in the UK.
That's less than a 1/3 of the price, but it would be a used machine.
It all depends on your budget.

This would be my typical solution :
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ASUS-K53E-windows-7-500gb-hdd-4gb-ram-win-64-bit-/161762606351?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item25a9cd7d0f
https://www.asus.com/Notebooks/K53E/specifications/
I would upgrade the chip to an i7 when they were fairly cheap, and immediately upgrade the memory to 8gb.
Also I would move one of my bigger hard drives to the new machine, that would be 1 Tb.
Repeating again, it depends on your budget.

Second thoughts I'd be careful of the above.
Download its images, and zoom in close to examine the item.
If you look at the base of the laptop it can be seen that the COA is for a Dell !
There is no need to get an inferior item, just look around a little more.

Here's my view on a back up machine, you might be buying it as a back up but you have to remember that one day this is going to be your main machine. So for me, a back up has to meet or exceed what I currently use.

True. I only gig on Friday & Saturday's and if the worst does happen I have current backup CDs and the club has a gazillion CDs 80s thru early 00's and all of the NOW series so I would be covered audio-wise if something happened in the middle of the night. I'd have at least a week to get something shipped in or picked up.
Beatbreaker - I am eyeing hard the one you have because I have read about all you do with yours (way more than what I push). Can you find that version "new" or are they all used/refurbs?

I bought mine about 2 years ago from Best Buy for 800, I haggled them down from the 1000 they were asking (pays to know more then them 😜). Their website says they are discontinued now. I'd say go into a Best Buy and haggle them until they come down and yes they can come down on anything except MacBooks but that's because of Apple from the way I understand it.
I'd say go for it a refurbished unit from a trusted seller.
