Hi my name is Alicia. I am familiar with audio in some aspect as I am attending school for audio engineering, but was recently introduced to Virtual DJ in it's entirety by a friend of mine who has allowed me use of his equipment for Djing for weddings, graduation parties, etc. I am also curious about learning how to DJ. My girlfriend has allowed me to use her MacBook to utilize the Virtual DJ software. I successfully have been able to install Virtual DJ from the CD and it's serial number into my Mac. I have a couple questions. I have a mixer of my own which is compatible with Virtual DJ (I will list the exact model later as I don't have it handy in front of me) As someone who is entering the music industry for audio engineering I want to be able to access a large amount of songs legally to play at these weddings, gigs, etc. I was wondering if someone could give me some insight on the use of the subscription process for the Content Unlimited program and sort of outline what it does exactly and your review of the process itself. It is something I would LOVE to utilize for gigs. Also, after downloading Virtual DJ to my Mac, it has an update for Virtual DJ 8. I am unable to activate this download as I don't have whatever key is required to update or my machine has not been registered properly (Could someone help me guide through this, and if so, is there resources or a tutorial for this? Who would I need to contact, etc?)
Answers would be much appreciated. Thanks for being patient with me as I am a beginner to Virtual DJ. :)

Outside of going to school for DJ'ing, there are a lot of sites and youtube videos where you can do some self education. Besides the mix and music sections in this forum, check out:

If your friend has already registered the software to their account, the license is not transferable. You can get the current version of Virtual DJ 8 from the download link above and use it for free at home. Depending on what hardware you want to use, there are various licenseing option. The free version will let you use your computer to mix. I believe it will also let you use controllers for 10 min. to see how they work.
Legal sources of music vary. You can purchase CD's and rip them. You can sign up for a music subscription service. And, you can subscribe to the Content Umlimited, that you mentioned, service that works right within Virtual DJ.
The description for CU is here:

Read through that and ask any questions that you have.

I'm not a CU (content unlimited) user but can tell you this, there are thousands whom rely on CU with VDJ,
Recently there has been a problem with the provider (the first in years, perhaps ever) so a new source has been found.
As you'd expect with a new system there are teething problems but CU appears to be at the very top of the todo list, (beta builds are published about 3 times a month, proven public builds around 1 a month)
Here's the newest beta for mac, it may solve your CU problem
http://virtualdj.com/download/virtualdj8/mac/2325
From what I've read the initial CU catalogue was a bit sparse (only more recent releases) but as of 2 days ago an expanded catalogue has been included with the newest beta.
One sticking point from what you've said, if you're giging and being paid, then a subscription (US$19/month) or a full purchase ($299) is the only legit way to use VDJ.
As you've said you are learning, first of all learn from your gear lender. (It's the quickest way)
I'd take advantage of the home (free) licence 10 minute trial in practice time, and ask your beginners questions on the forum (just avoid capslock, multiple exclamation marks & break text up into spaced paragraphs :-) ) a helping hand is never more than a few hours away.
The next step is maybe a month subscription, giving you a chance to hammer it (without the 10min restriction) , since you're studying AE then you'll know each bit of gear has it's nuances, VDJ is no different, although VDJ is very open, as is (out of the box) VDJ performs just as well as any other SW, but if care to; you can change how it looks, how it interacts with the controller, how it interacts with DMX. There are very few limitations on what can be customizable.
Don't be afraid to ask questions but I mean this sincerely face to face tuition for day 1 learning is equal to weeks of YT videos. (because YT videos are dull as dish water)
