Topic: forgot my gig computer Don't panic!

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

well I suppose it had to happen one day, rushing around after work to get the van loaded, then off to my Saturday night gig, I can remember thinking have I got everything ?, is there something missing ?, as I closed the van door.

Unloads the van starts setting up , no gig computer!!, I had taken it out of storage and into the house to do some update! ,

Don't panic !

backup laptop phew, when was the last music folder sync?, three months ago, ok slight panic, remember CU is down, a little more panic......

so Pub Wi-Fi, update VDJ to latest version , update the config (as my backup lappy is normally connected to a numark mixtrack pro), great up and working with my Mc6000!, next music, well my core collection is there , what about netsearch , working well , pre listen was essential, but I managed to find every track I needed or that was requested.

well the nights going well we are well past midnight when the host asks can we do Karaoke, I explain that it was not booked as a karaoke night, and if it had been requested I would have arrived with different kit , so I check the equipment I have, well theres the 24" monitor that normally connect to the gig computer and the backup cable microphone, so in a delicate operation, I swap mics giving me a pair of radio microphones, plug in the monitor and enable dual screen, dig out a couple of Karaoke books that seem to have been packed in the wrong storage box, and I think yea I can do this...after a renegotiation we are up and running with Karaoke,

I did have a few reservations as my backup laptop is only an intel I3,

Virtual DJ 8 worked superbly , I did not even have to stop the music while configuring the dual screen option , I had no problems with speed of Karaoke graphics , cpu load , Nesearch , drop outs or crashing !, 7pm to 1.30 am

just thought I would drop a quick post as we all seem to moan a bit when things don't do great, I guess the (VDJ) gods were with me lol

+1 for positive news
+1 earned for your flexibility (and guts) :)

Your name will be remembered over there.

Well done, sir. Well done, indeed.

"what about netsearch , working well" what is netsearch, and is it safe ? I have a long standing phobia about the Internet, and a computer. I demand that my system is ultra reliable, this does not seem to be the case with the Internet.

My cheapo back-up, I have many, is just a Blackberry Z10 running the android Cross DJ app ( which only cost £3.50 ).
Cross DJ integrates Soundcloud !
It runs very well, and I don't care if my phone occasionally crashes.
It can be configured for a mixer output !
Effects can be controlled by a square touchpad, as opposed to knobs!
It is an excellent little backup for my VDJ 8 main system.

I'm wondering when I will be brave enough to go on line in front of a crowd?
Comments.

Go sureview! That's the mark of a pro, how you fair when things aren't perfect.

Yup I have to agree with Loco, that's how you tell who's a pro and who's not.

Great job and glad everything worked out in the end......

thanks for your comments guys appreciated.

well when you have done hundreds of gigs , with lots of different setups you can always seen to keep things going...

one of the most extreme hacks was back in about 1990, 800 people 4kw oh audio Big House party (they would call it a rave now lol)

one of the six amps (two top, two mid, two base) triggered its thermal cut out , obviously it was one on the base amps, well when you lose 1.5k out of your audio setup you sort of notice it.....

hack of the day was about 20 pint pots from the bar, full of ice in a grid on a table at the back of the amp, couple of trays on the top, forming a nice tunnel to cool the incoming air (it was a hot day), Result !, amp kicked in after about 4 or 5 mins, no more trouble for the rest of the night, mind you we did re fill the ice a few times

always good to have a backup plan, my rig generally has two of everything , dib dib dib and all that

bigron

Netsearch is the VDJ integrated music download service, if a search brings back no results it searches online, you really need to pre listen to the track as you don't know the source , but it works ok , don't normally use it as I subscribe to content unlimited , but unfortunately that service is not running at the moment due the demise of grooveshark

hopefully it will be up and running again soon

I suspect that your method which includes Netsearch, and Grooveshark, or its decendents are the future.
Do you work all over the place, or just in the big cities which have good network coverage?
Would it work in the hills of North Wales?

I sometimes get very close to some big mountains.

Well bigron most venues have Wi-Fi now, normally free, I always ring the venue and ask , normally if its chargeable they make the exception as your working there, if not my gig computer is tethered to my phone, no problem on 4G and 3G, to be honest I cant recall a gig I have done in the last couple of years were I haven't been able to get some sort of internet connection .

and CU when its back up is a godsend, example did a friends wedding, his boss was over from Greece with the family , when the dance floor started to quiet down, he came over and very politely ask if I had any Greek music, I had to confess no.

but.... a quick google of the Greek top 40 , copy and paste a few titles (no Greek keyboard!) and a few mins later , bang the dance floors rocking to the current Greek dance tunes, well he was amazed , gave me a £40 tip

I have not cancelled my subscription and hope the service is up and running again soon ....

I have issues with running on venue connections, even more so if they are free. They get overloaded easily.
I use a tethered access point similar to the tethered phone mentioned. The access point also provides private wifi access for my other devices, like an iPad for remote control, or a sepereate lighting PC that receives commands from VDJ.

A couple of things I would suggest. If you use CU or Netsearch tracks, download them to your cache instead of just placing them in a deck. Sometimes you can have an Internet glitch when you load it into the deck and the VDJ interface hangs up until there is a response. Caching the song does not have that problem.
If you start trying network stuff, do a burn in test for at least 8 hours to watch for glitches. Some wifi adapter drivers cause delays or pauses in the OS. Watch for that, if you start seeing it, I recommend going to a cabled solution.
