I am starting to do mobile video djing and would like to know the best computer to use? Should i go laptop or desktop? I don't mind carrying a desktop if the video card will fit in a Mid-atx case. Do you guys think the desktop solution would be cheaper over a laptop? Either way()laptop or desktop) what specs do you recommend for cpu, memory, video card, hard drive?

Get as fast as you can afford with (i5 i7) as much ram (8GB+) as you can afford,
HDD ideally SSD
Desktops are more upgradable but not as mobile.

Don't forget to get the best video card you possibly can in whatever machine you get.
Me personally, I won't use anything other then a Mac or an Asus PC and the HAVE to have Nvidia cards with NO LESS then a gig of ram........

In addition to desktop and laptop, there's the rack mount option. With your computer in a rack case, you can secure it in a flight case and it'll be much more rugged for the road.
The flight case can also house other essentials like the keyboard, screen, controller, video processors...

if are are going to be mobile i would say a SSD drive is pretty much a must .....
1 Computer boots in seconds.... after a crash it happens don't fool yourself
2 Durability ... no moving parts means u can knock em around and they don't die standard HD aren't likley to take half the abuse a SSD can.

Is the Dell xps or the alienware line any good? What about radon video cards?
I was looking at this one:

the alienware looks nice ... keep in mind some controllers and sound interfaces do not work correctly with USB 3 ports so investigate before you buy.

Ah I did not know that. I use a hercules mk2 as the controller, do you know of any problems with it?

its ok to do a little of the legwork on your own lol -> https://www.google.com/search?q=hercules+mk2&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#safe=off&q=hercules+mk2+usb+3
i think u need a firmware update for usb3 but i would consult the manufacturer on that.... see link above

Thanks. Do I really need a $2000 laptop or can I get away with something around $1000?

my laptop was around 500 but i am doing strictly music if you are doing video it may be worth it. You need to consult some of the video guys on here they would know best on that......
of course i have upgraded the ram in my laptop to max it out and exchanged the HD for a SSD ... that stuff cost around 300 - 400 so maybe if u get a machine already at the specs you want 2000 isn't such a bad price...
i'm sure beatbreaker is doing video and he said

Ok. So 2 gig video card and core i7 with 8GB ram should be enough? Do you guys suggest using an SSD as video file storage?

I only do video and I've used a number of custom built desktops from 04 until Dec 14. I have only used ASUS motherboards with Intel processors and chips, and NVidia video cards. I can upgrade or change damaged components, in a matter of hours and be playing the same night. I bought a Dell XPS 17 with Vista, but never really got the sound to work. To be honest, I never put in enough time to try to get it to work. I also loved my 23 inch monitor, and 8TB of internal drives. I bought an ASUS laptop here, in Dec 14. There are 6TB drives on the market, but I chose to get three 2TB drives these. Something about putting all of my eggs in one basket thing. They are connected to a 7 port USB3 hub on the right side (the left USB3 ports don't like hard drives, known issue). I use them for my Launchpad S and either of my controllers (Denon MC6000 or Hercules RMX2). I play 7 to 8 hours, 3 nights a week in a club, and a variety of mobile gigs. Unless you have a lot of money, forget about using SSD for your videos. Now, decide on your budget, and make a decision based on what your needs are.
