Over the years there has been countless things people do or say when I'm doing a gig that really piss me off or annoy me
But the most recent one was this past Friday night I was DJing a small bar which usually has been an easy job I do a couple times a month.
However this time was a little different....It's early in the night and there is maybe 10 people there and in walks a girl and a couple of her friends and as soon as they walk in one of them walks up to me and hands me a list of songs and I looked at her like are you serious!
My response was "I should charge you for each song because you are treating me like a jukebox!"
She laughs and walks off which made me even more mad.....In my opinion this was disrespectful and also in my opinion the only time a list of songs is ok with me is if I'm DJing a wedding or any other kind of special event where they would like certain songs played but not at a bar!
I'm just venting for the most part but if anyone has any thoughts on this I would love to hear them.

Countless to say the least, I could write a book. Bars are the most volatile environment for a mobile DJ, you get treated like crap. Drinks hovered over controllers, subs used as seats & coffee tables, light & speaker stands knocked into.
And of course the often human jukebox treatment.
But the ultimate test of ones patience is when your'e beating off requests while dealing with a hardware/software malfunction.
You have to get used to it and push on! Thats what we do.

1 - People who come up and show you the song they want on their phone screen. Don't even talk or acknowledge you are really there. Ignorant b*stards!
2 - People who are stupid enough to buy iphones that run out of power within hours. Can I charge my iphone from your laptop ...... erm .... NO!

I really have a you can take it or leave it approach now that I'm older and that I have another business to fall back on. It really is all in the approach, I would find myself talking to her about how to approach people and how to be nice and polite, even telling her that it might be nice making a gesture of good will by offering to buy the DJ a drink or something. If the attitude persists I have been know to rip up playlists.

I agree with you on that one. You can even predict what they're about to do - you can see them crossing the room, head down, finger swiping. Some DJs don't help matters though, with their "text me your requests" screens and similar tech.
The phone thrusters are bearable though, as long as their request fits the current vibe.
The ones that bug me are the people who insist on requesting a track that's an absolute polar opposite of whatever you're playing.

The more difficult thing for me at the moment is I work in a very busy city centre (Wetherspoons) bar. Manager wants only chart and current music but 90% of the requests are for older music he doesn't want me to play. I politely explain that their request doesn't fit with the music policy of the venue and they just stare at me!

That there's a problem with the manager, not the punters. :-)
You should divert them to the manager - perhaps the message will sink in when he/she realises that's what the customers want.

I get that pretty often where people want something totally different
That happened to me at my gig Saturday.....Everyone was loving the hip hop, pop current dance stuff and then a guy come up and wanted something really hard heavy rock
So I told him I would see what I could do but that only worked for a little while because he would come by and say "Come on man I need some rock!"
Kind of bothersome....So I waited until the very end of the night when most of the crowd left and then I played it Lol

When their on the mic all the time asking for requests too, this type of jukebox djing has really made it hard for us all, I know none of us are superstars and we have to give them what they want to hear but by advertising yourself as a jukebox these dj's made people think it's the norm for the dj to just play whatever, whenever. Sad
I have decided next year to get two CDJ 2000 nexus players and a DJM 2000 Nexus coffin cased and just play off memory stick in bars and small clubs, playing what I like. Get a following etc, get rid of all the people that want random stuff.

Look at it this way. She gave you a list with 10 songs. That means you only had to deal with her once instead of 10 separate times during the night !

yeah I have the same type of idiot manager and the owner is just as bad if not worse. and even when it costs them customers they still think their way is right.

Haha I had a fellow DJ come up behind me and take a picture of my browser!! He's been bugging me about where I gety tracks from and that's one thing I don't give up. It's just a habit from back in the day I guess, you know, no labels, no digging through my crates, CDs never in the right sleeve, lmmfao!!
Sure we all play the same tracks but I still dig for them gems even if I'm just sitting my butt on the couch with a laptop checking sites or I get them from other producers/djs. I mean it's our style and track selection that separates us, right??
No you can not get my hard drive or check out my browser when I'm playing!!!

That reminds me - the punters who ask "What tracks have you got?". You want me to list all of 'em?!
"Can I look through your tracks?" NO! If you want something specific, tell me. Otherwise, go away!

It really annoys me when someone comes up to request and they ask "So what do you have?" or "What kind of music do you have?"
Or one of my all time favorites "Play something people can dance to!" and 99% of the time when this is said to me the dance is packed and has been packed most of the night

I've actually had this happen to me just this past New Years Eve at a bar I was DJing at. There was a chick there that was also celebrating her birthday that night. She flat out told me as I started the songs "she expected, and must hear", cause its her birthday!" I flat out told her, she get 2 requests so make them good ones. She goes to the bar manager to tell her that I would not take requests. Bar manager told her, I was not a jukebox.....they left shortly thereafter. As packed as that bar was, I don't think her party of 5-6 people was missed much as far as bar sales were concerned.
I typically just entertain requests from people only if it fits in. Otherwise I just say no.

I run into this all the time. I run a hybrid DJ/Karaoke show on the weekends. Its turned into a pretty popular show, we're coming up on 4 years of residency. What has kept us strong is the owner's insistence that we control the music.
People always seem to want to sing the slowest song possible while I have the house in full prime time party mode. I love some people's looks when I say no to a song. I've learned some people take their karaoke way too seriously... lol.

Two little stories I experienced the last couple of weeks:
M=me
G=guy
*Guy walks up to me*
G: Could you play something from Snoop Dog?
M: Sure, which song do you want?
G: Don't know, any song will be good.
*Guy walks away... Couple of songs later I played something from Snoop Dog*
*Guy appears again*
G: Not that one....
The other night, same location:
I was playing some house tracks and a drunk girl walked up to me and requested some hip hop.
I was ok with that, because I was gonna to change the genre the next couple of tracks anyway.
So I started to play some hip hop. When the first hip hop track just went half through, the same girl came back
"Can you play some house?" -_-

I had a woman in ft mac tell me to play her song or else she was going to get me fired. so I told the door man to not let anyone up in the booth.. ( it was huge and 10 feet in the air.. I took off my pants and then sent out a request on the mic to the girl who came up here to get the song as I have a question. She came over and then went up the stairs to find me totally naked lower half and then I said I cant play it its broken and snapped the cd in half.. She went and told the owner as she went running out of the booth. He came over and saw me still half naked and started laughing and I said " we need a fan in here im sweating" ... I never saw her again..
