First let me list my hardware
Laptop ASUS G74SX Republic of Gamers
Intel i7 @ 2.2 Ghz
8.00 GB Ram
64 Bit
Controller Denon MC-6000 With latest Firmware.
Software Virtual DJ 7.3 Pro
Using the Mouse to drop a song in a deck and or playlist you get the little record symbol and when you drop it in the wave file comes in (MP3). On a few occasions I have had the record symbol sit there for awhile then drop in . If this begins to happen you might as well shut down the software and start over because it is about to lock up. Most of the time this clears it up when you reboot the software. Recently I have tried to run a 2TB external with about 1.7 TB of music. There is a definite slow down searching for music and eventually the same thing happens as stated above. Once it freezes it takes a long time to disconnect the external hard drive and about the same time to shut down Virtual Dj. I have abandoned the Idea of using the External Hard drive unless there is some fix.

At first I would suggest that you update to the latest VDJ Version.
Just to make sure it isn't a software problem that has been fixed.

Sounds like your external goes to sleep. I get the same thing. Sometimes it take 30 seconds to wake up and finish loading the file. I don't remember the name but there are free programs to keep the external awake

I used a G74 for about a year before problems started and now I wouldn't trust it on a gig. I would suggest getting another machine. The G74 is a great gaming pc but the thing gave me nothing but problems as time went on.
Theres also YouTube videos showing how to clean the cooling fan dust out of the G74, something to consider if you haven't done that.
BTW, what kind of external are you using and do you use the same USB port every time?

Scratch that.... I have a G73 not a 74, been a while since I've even fired it up.

So, you don't have this problem with the internal drive, and you have traced the problem to the external? Have you defragged this drive lately? What is the % of free space left? If you have been using the same port, what happens if you try a different port? Different cable? Different hard drive? You didn't say which OS you are using.

I had no problems other than this with the computer. Of course I always have a backup laptop. My OS is windows 7. I have had this problem from hard drive as well, but not as often. When it first happened on the hard drive I ended up changing out Usb cable from denon MC-6000 to laptop and this seemed to cure things for awhile. The external drive I use is one of two 2.0 usb ports. The external drive is a WD My Passport Ultra 2TB that is compatible with 3.0/2.0 usb. By the way I did upgrade to Virtual DJ 7.4.

What is the % of free space, and have you defragged? Also, could you re-read your post^ and see if it makes sense to you.

I'm using the exact same external, but on an USB 3.0 port.
Haven't had any issues so far. Except the "goes to sleep" problem. That happend once and the VDJ skin froze for a couple of seconds.
But that didn't affect the sound or video output. Once the external was awake again the skin was responding too.
Did you set your power options to not allow usb devices to be suspended?
USB settings > USB selective suspend setting > Setting = Disabled
and disable power saving options in the device manager

First To A Man and His Music, Your Correct the post was somewhat jumbled. I should have listed my responses to each of your questions instead of them being jumbled up in one paragraph. So Hear goes.
1) As far as the computer I have had no problems except the record symbol hovering over the deck for awhile before the file drops in. I have had the software show me the circle with a line through it showing the file is not available I guess when I tried to drop it in a deck. This has happened with no external drive attached. When This Happened I Shut the Software Down and Rebooted and it was ok. This happened twice that I can remember.
2) Hard Drive Free Space is 557 GB. This Drive was Probably Defragged About 6 Mos Ago.
3) External Drive is WD My Passport Ultra 2TB 3.0/2.0 USB Compatible. The amount of free space on it is 569 GB Available
External Drive is Brand New so it has not been defragged.
4) I have switched out USB cable that connects MC-6000 to laptop and used the 3.0 Port. This seemed to help the situation with the laptop
and controller situation. Have seen no problems since if using computer hard drive only. External Drive is A different situation.
5) In Response to PachN. You May have hit on something with the " Goes to Sleep" Problem. I checked in the Device Manager and the USB Drives were checked for conserve energy. I unchecked all USB Drives. My Question at this point would be if you scan all these songs should you expect the search process to be major slow or should it not really have an impact on normal search time since the eternal drive itself creates a file that sort of catalogs the location of each song . Which would be title and artist.
PachN How Much Music are you storing on your drive and what are you experiencing as far as search time for music and playing music and/or video from an external drive of the 2TB SIZE.
I want to thank you guys for your help so far. Communication with fellow dj's is a huge help
Thanks

I understand the external going to sleep, but how could that be if you are playing? What, is it going to sleep every 4 minutes? I have that same drive, but have not used it, yet. I just bought it because it was on sale for $94.00. I do have 2 of the 1TB drives, and have them on usb 3 ports. There is no lag. I am not using them on a regular basis, because I use a desktop with 4x2TB internal drives. I don't understand the switching the cable from the 6000. I would use the usb 3 cable the drive came with, and connect to a usb 3 port.

I don't know the exact amount of time before the hdd goes to sleep mode. But it has to be something between 6 to 10 minutes.
I'm not sure if I understand you correct, what do you mean by scan all songs and search for songs?
Do you BPM-scan your library in the background and then search for a song no the hdd?
If that's the case searching could be way slower.
My hdd is nearly full and has just video files on it.
But that should not affect search time in any way.
Here is why:
If you do a rightclick on a folder and choose "add to search db" virtualdj will not search on the hdd itself by touching file to file and check if it fits your serach terms.
As you may know VDJ creates it's own virtualdj database on every hard drive. In case of an external the file is named "virtualdj local database v6.xml". VDJ will use this file to search for titels which is a lot faster.

First a man and his music. Switching the cable was part of the elimination process in an effort to find the source of the problem. Probably what helped more than anything was using the 3.0 USB Port. I plan to switch back to the cable that came with my MC 6000 to see if this makes a difference.
I only have 1 3.0 USB Port or I would connect the External drive to it. If you could get enough memory without costing you an arm and a leg I would buy a solid state drive. Like all new technology it will come down in price but not yet.
To PachN. What I did was select each folder on the external that I wanted to use. I see the file that Virtual Dj Makes and understand that this file is created on each external hard drive, so I guess that means it knows where everything is located once the drive is opened inVDJ. Some software you have to do an import for the database to know where the titles are. Does it matter which USB You run the external drive in. I have run this externanl drive in one of two ports?
One more question. Since I only have one USB 3.0, what would be the pros/cons of using a 3.0 Hub or would that be a no no?
Thanks Guys

have the same problems with my G73JH Lappys on the internal drives Freezes during searches. Say you open genre list it freezes but when you close and reopen anytime thereafter its fine. The other issue is what was mentioned befroe dragging a song onto deck and it freezes as if its goes in to search mode. Also the other issue is opening up song date file to place a comment or edit and then when you close it you cant search for any more tracks unless you open another instance of VDJ. I was hoping to trial this out on Beta to make sure the errors had gone. I am using 800gb of music on one internal Momentus 1tb drive and Karaoke another internal drive with my C drive which has 700gb spare.

Strange... it sounds like it's something to do with the ASUS G7x series.
I too do use an ASUS (no G7X) and as said above a WD MyPassport, no problems so far.

I don't think it's the G74 that is at issue. I use this laptop at least once a week Dj'g plus some gigs on weekends, plus using it on a daily basis with other softwares such as autocad, windows office, and another dj software on occasion. VDJ has been used for the last two years every week. The only issues I've had are the issues withVDJ vs freezing on occasion with internal drive and most often with the passport external drive. Using this laptop I archived (1.78 tb) of information from the passport external drive to two identical passport drives taking about 14 hrs per drive of continuous running without issue. So I don't think it's a laptop issue. Weird
