Topic: Content unlimited unavailable in high school.

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

Yesterday while doing a local high school pep rally I discovered that CU was unavailable in the school's network. I had DJ'd at their first school year dance back in November and I did not have a problem with CU. The problem with the CU unavailability was that I use CU to get clean version of the songs as well as requests from the students. Let me add that CU has been great to me, specially in these type of events where kids ask for songs that are not normally on the radio. CU has made my life much easier and really gets the kids going by allowing me to play every single one of their requests. Sorry I got a little sidetracked there. Like I was saying, CU was unavailable for me because the districts tech department had installed new restrictions on the network that did not allow me to stream the songs from CU. I was able to use my mobile phone as a "hot stop" and access the internet from there. Before actually doing this I was concerned about the amount of data that it will take. To my surprise it was only around 500MB for 3 hours of internet usage from my mobile hot stop. Thank you once again VDJ! and I hope someone can benefit from reading this.

It doesn't surprise me that downloading songs from the internet is not permitted in a school.

It does surprise me however that you relied so heavily on downloading at a gig. 500MB over 3 hours - that's got to be almost every song you played! Where was your preparation?

Lucky for you there was a mobile phone signal at the location. If there wasn't, what would you have done?

Like I mentioned in the post, the network had previously let me streamed but had gotten more restricted in that time frame.

500MB for the 3 hours was not bad at all. : )

Yes I do rely very heavily on CU but my external hard drive is always there just in case everything else fails.

In all honesty, you have this the wrong way round. You should rely heavily on your local music (albeit internal or external) and have CU for this missing/everything else fails scenarios.

Remember CU is a subscription service, once you give up the service or let your membership lapse, you will loose everything you have come to depend on. This is a bad business decision IMO.

Cheers,

Roy

If this is a regular Gig for you then it certainly makes sense to have CU available for the latest or weirdest requests lol. But really, some research or just using your experience of previous Gigs, should be helping you to purchase or at least pre download as much as possible to cache. Live streaming can catch you out if your connection drops.

Glad to hear CU is working so well for you but try not to rely on it too much.

If you're djing school events ona regular basis iI highly recommend joining this . Site as it is a valuable resource.

You REALLY need to rely on your local library.

I subscribe to one of the CU plans but I rarely use it. I guess I am from the old school era...when someone asks for a song and I do not have it I simply tell them that. The party keeps going.

I'm probably gonna throw up a can of worms here but I disagree with some of the comments here.

If a DJ makes a decision to subscribe to their music (Content Unlimited) then surely that's their choice??
If a DJ makes a decision to purchase their music then this is also their choice.

Ultimately all the music is licensed for use in the same way so who are we to say you should purchase you music when their are many services out their that support subscriptions.

I don't DJ professionally anymore, I do the odd gig once a month at the most and CU does what I need it to do. I'm not spending hundreds buying music I won't need again. Maybe this is the same for other DJs. So I believe their is a time and a place where you can rely purely on CU. I also firmly believe in supporting VDJ and the community which is why apart from a few stray months I have been a subscriber since day 1.

Where I do stand by some comments here is about internet access. ALWAYS download as much content that you may need before hand. You can never rely on a venues wifi access or indeed your phone hotspot, too many things to go wrong. It's great for those odd ball requests but you can't be streaming and downloading live. Too much stress on the PC.

CU is here to give the choice. I personally love the new video service in the UK. The few gigs I do now are almost all video so this is great. For the price and UNLIMITED access is superb.

Granted if I DJd 2,3,4 days a week I might view this topic differently but as it stands CU has it's place and people have the choice. That choice should be respected regardless of your own views on the matter.

Thats the problem with fly by night DJs! Thanks Craigslist!!!!

Laptop and powered speakers is all you need to be a DJ. Any professional with expeience KNOWS that they would not stream an event.

People like that give me a headache, someone get me som Tylenol!

WOW. Someone is having a bad day. Sorry for "tainting" your profession. It does the job for me AND it gets me MONEY. I approached the activities director at this high school without ANY experience at all with high school dances. I did it because I wanted to succeed and make the kids have a great time while earning me a paycheck. Guess what else? I did it with powered speakers, a laptop, some lights, and a Denon bro. Guess what else? They loved me AND they hired me for all their school events. So far I've done 2 dances and a pep rally with many more to come. Don't come here and try to rain on someone else's business. I'm sure there's plenty of other DJ's here that work like I do so THINK before you type fool.

I am with Roy on this one. I am out 3 4 5 nights a week CU for me not really an option thats why i have my pools which are constantly feeding me the latest and an external that is chock full of classic tracks and obscure ones as well. If you wanna exclusively use CU thats all well I am not gonna hate but If your exernal is ready use that and graab the latest if needed from CU

Speaking from 30+ years in the game it may help ya in the long run.

Keep Mixing

Walt
