high number should give clear sound if this is the problem but will give you a delay

Please ensure that your computer has been optimised for DJ performance. This should allow you to achieve a lower setting without any issues: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Performance%20Issues.html
Once you have done this, set the buffer to the size where you get no sound break-up, stuttering, etc. (The correct setting will depend on your computer and its performance.)
