To me, it seems like he's not saying "an EDM DJ can't do what a hip-hop DJ can"....
He's saying that a DJ who only plays one genre isn't as versatile as a DJ who plays various genres. Which kinda goes without saying.

Quoting Sway " Dance music is the easiest music to mix in my opinion, the BPMs are all the same, the melodies are all the same, the chords are all the same. They can kill that. But you cant take an EDM DJ and bring him to a Hip Hop party and expect him to kill it."

Yeah, I can quote Sway too...

When I was growing up, you had to spin all genres. Whether it was soul, whether it was dance, hip hop, polka, pop, whatever.
DJ Scratch could spin on any platform. You could take him to those EDM parties.

Yes thats the average Hip-Hop DJ. But he feel a DJ thats Considered a EDM DJ cant flip all those Genres

....which is what I said in my first post. It's not so much about hip-hop vs EDM. It's multi-genre vs single genre.

DUDE, REALLY? You must be an EDM focused DJ to keep trying to spin what he's saying. SO here's WHAT HE'S SAYING: EDM DJ's MOSTLY CANNOT spin more then EDM. HIP HOP DJ's CAN and DO spin more than their genre. ALL DAY, EVERY DAY, The EDM dj's fall FLAT on their BUTTS when they go outside the box. Hip Hop DJ's are more versatile, dealing with bps, from 60 to 140 song to song. EDM.. YA.. 128-132 WOW... LOL

That 'box' may be a little bigger than you think. EDM (I hate that term) is a far wider range of BPMs than 128-132 - it can drop down as slow as hip-hop, or you've got speedcore that exceeds 240bpm.
My gigs generally range from around 70 bpm to 180 bpm with a mixture of genres which at times may include some hip-hop although it's not particularly big here IMHO.
Your statement is a massive sweeping and incorrect one.

True a hip hop dj my have some tricks on the tables, that your typical edm dj doesn't, but like SBDJ said that's not always the case. EDM djs used to be pretty specific within their own niches, but I'm seeing more and more, that go just as hard as the hip hop guys. You don't typically see a hip hop dj make a new song with samples of other songs on the fly.

totally agree...basically,you should'nt generalize.there's many that crossed over from one genre to another over time.and the one genre borrows from the other constantly and we all evolve.now if you're one of those that dont...tisk,tisk...he,he

that is basically what Hip Hop DJ's do with their scratch routines not samples but pieces of songs not chopped into samples and button press ready, but specific vinyl position .

I agree that mixing hip hop requires a lot of talent and focus , and very careful placement.
but I don't think sway has heard of diplo - he can mix moombahton, electro house, reggae, trap, and hip hop all into one mix
RL Grime mixes a lot of hip hop into edm music soooo there's that

Speaking for myself 90% of the gigs i get require me to jump across multiple genres...its been like that since i started djing...i do country music gigs every now and then..so i feel my music knowledge is Vast. But it started with digging for samples, which brought me into certains musics most wouldnt think of, but I dont consider myself a hiphop dj. Im a DJ period.

Most hip hop dj's don't do routines during their shows, and when they do a routine, it's typically limited to a few tracks, and mostly only two at a time. Rare to see a hip hop dj run 4 decks. I don't mean to detract from hip hop djs at all though. Hip Hop def has it's own level of difficulty, and it a totally different style of mixing. I've seen plenty of amazing hip hop djs just don't think you can count out EDM djs either. If you think mixing EDM is easy, then you might be doing it wrong. That being said every performer in the world can always improve, and do more with their mixes.

Blending Dance music Edm seems easier for me. The bpms are steady. I DJ all types of music and to be able to mix everything in sessions and making it sound good is a lot harder. Mixing hip Hop is harder. Salsa Music is The Hardest to mix. many of the songs are recorded with live instruments and the bpm's are not steady. Another genre is Merengue Tipico. You have to loop part of the track so you blend in the next song. EDM has a steady beat but the hardest part is Now being able to loop live and then Loop roll, Ad your own effects and play with the eqs making it sound better.

I totally agree on the latin stuff. I have the worst time mixing that stuff.

Hi this is my first post, but I cant help but compare this topic to graffiti/street art, people that make stencils are being categorized as untalented or that they don't have the skills that old graffiti artist had. while that might be true, I believe that it is just an evolution of music(art) and require a different set of skills, why cant we all just get along? haha

i'm the resident. I have to be able to mix and play all of it. VDJ (and years of experience) lets me do it.
on any given night myself and my "mix dj" have to be able to mix cross-genre and put people out there on the floor and keep them in the building with a demographic that includes 18 - 60+ ages, trailerpark to $2-3 million dollar homes, civilian to soldier, minimum wage to millionaire, and on an on.
country, rock, hip-hop, R&B, dance, EDM, and just plain whatever the customers or management wants us to play and we have to make it work. my other dj grew up as a hip-hop dj who knew that he had to be more versatile - he can and does mix cross-genre and we bounce ideas off each other while mixing to see if something works.
2Pac's How Do You Want It vs Aerosmith's Ragdoll - go try it. i'll wait.
okay? you CAN mix Walk It Out with Pour Some Sugar On Me.
now think of a beat that will match that's a slower EDM and loop that sucker and adjust your pitch and key. blend. lather rinse repeat drop the beat.
to me the difference between a dj who is going to do this as a career and a dj who is going to do it for a little while for fun and not do it forever is one who can figure some of this out. I have worlds of respect for the single genre dj's who are craftsmen in that one single genre that may or may not have commercial staying power. but how many clubs stay as any one format for more than 10-15 years? we are a rare dinosaur that has been open since the late 90's but we still throw that party while keeping the country theme. but there is not one single hip-hop/rap/r&b/rock or any other single-genre club in the area that's been open for more than 5 years. even the smaller neighborhood bars barely last as long unless they change music with the crowd. me? i'm a music-whore: i'll play anything at work and go home and play what I like, but I know that at work I need to be a jack-of-all-trades dj and keep an open mind.
oh. there it is.
keep an open mind
just sayin'

I would pay good money to see Tiesto play some 90's hip hop and R&B.
BTW I now consider EDM to be its own genre. Anything that has that "electric razor" sound with a wobble or that dubstep drop in the middle of it. House is still House, Electro is still Electro.
