For me, I use actual folders as well and it's worked great since I started using VDJ 2006 coming from CD book format (CD# Track#).

CLUB MAIN drive
MUSIC
Dance/Club (club mixes) - stuff that is not considered "peak/prime time" ie: moto blanco, house type
* Year/Month

ELECTRO
* Year/Month

PROGRESSIVE
* Year/Month

Hip Hop
* Remix Services (tracks taken from different services that I know I would use)
* Singles (no dj intro/outro...single versions)

Prime Energy (peak club tracks)
*Year/Month

Remix Services
* <remix service folder> (dance only remixes..not close-to original stuff)
* <remix service folder>

RETRO
Disco (12" and dj intro/outro friendly edits)
* <remix service>
* singles
* 90's
* 90's/singles

I have other genre's as well such as Dubstep, EDM, Trance, Trap, etc laid out the same.

I also have a MOBILE MAIN folder laid out close to the same.

Oh yeah...and a shocker for you all..NONE of my tracks are id3'd! I learned that mistake a while back that either EVERYTHING has to be ID'd correctly or NONE. I had a bunch of stuff from remixer friends who's tags were like <song abbrivation><part artist><version number>. My database was all screwed up at that point. I keep ID3 in VDJ browser config disabled at all times but my filenames has all the info I need [example: artist-title (mix)]

What's your beef bro?? He asked a question I answered. No where did I say I was better or my way was better but if the shoe fits WEAR IT bro......and wear it with pride.

As far as perks, I'm talking loops and such nothing to do with how i manage my music. Up until a year or so ago I would just throw everything into ONE folder. I can do this cause I don't really keep anything I don't play and I'm always rotating my tracks. Some get deleted some go on an external drive. I don't need 50 thousand tracks and know EVERYTHING that's in my library.....

So please don't try to target me cause you don't do things like I do or how I answered someone else's question ......keep it movin now.

Still waiting for you to tell me how you did it BEFORE software??

This is a discussion talking about the pros and cons of different music managers, and different systems for managing music without them.

Your first comment in this discussion was this:

beatbreaker1 wrote :
Its called "Knowing your music"......... What did you guys do before software??

are you saying that comment wasn't intended to be sarcastic?

Then you said:

beatbreaker1 wrote :
I keep it simple and only use folders as well.

Fair enough. I used to only use folders too, but now I use MediaMonkey, because it offers far more versatility and speed over manually managing everything by folder/filenames alone.

Then you said:

beatbreaker1 wrote :
I basically do, the software is just another way to carry crates of records around..........everything else is just a perk.

OK - you like to keep it simple and 'old school'. I don't have a problem with that. I do have a problem with people who suggest that their 'old school' way of doing things makes them better than people who manage their music using more modern means, while using modern software themselves (as your first comment seemed to imply).

OK - that's fine. That works for you. It's not going to work for everyone else though (it wouldn't work for me).

For some DJ's with upwards of 20 thousand tracks, a music manager is the only way of managing that much music without them going insane. Can you at least acknowledge that simply remembering 20 thousand song names, ratings, genres, artists and eras is not really feasible for most people?

Not everyone has the time or the patience to manually create a playlist to suit each different situation. Many people (like myself) prefer to use 'smart playlists' where playlists can be created automatically based on certain rules.

I'm not targeting you. You responded to my posts and my questions in a way that *seemed* to be sarcastic. Maybe I misread your posts, in which case I apologise.

Well, you need to re-read my previous post then:

djnanite wrote :
We managed our music in our own ways (I organised my collection alphabetically by artist name).

But if you want more detail:

I originally organised my CD collection alphabetically by artist name. Then I got into DJ-ing and grouped my CDs and vinyls first by genre, then by artist.

When I moved my collection over to MP3, I grouped them in folders - first by genre, then by artist.

I still do that now, but I am not reliant on the folder structure being exact any more. The main reason is that I have so many tunes that cross multiple genres, it would be impossible to have them reliably sit in any one genre.

Take a DJ like A.Skillz, for example. His music could just as easily be categorised as Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop, Breakbeat and Electro. How would you know which folder to find him in if you categorised your folders by genre?

This forum is full of sarcastic a$$ people, some people as myself come here for knowledge about the program. Then someone will make statements like what did you do before software or doing a certain task or wishing the software was better in this certain task, they wanna say things that equate to doubting or questioning others skills. If you question my skills my retort will always be....LETS BATTLE!!! Cause if you think my questions dictate my skills. Lets Battle!!! IMM bringing 1200s and wax. Lets Battle. Thats what i grew up doing. OH you talking like Im inferior dj, Battle and prove you even have the skills to mention my name. Thats that Lefrak City i me....

Also what does a persons personal way of managing music deserve any reply other than "ok i see how you do it". Suggestions ok but this is my system and it works for me, i feel everything else is a non factor...

And VDJ file system is not so good.
