I need a pair of powered tops and a im confused as what I should buy. I was looking at the EV ZLX 15", my idea is to use theses only without a sub for most parties. but im also thinking can a 12" powered speaker do the job...I like a little bass in my system

Of course for serious Bass your gonna need a sub, but on the other hand I find the Alto Truesonic TS115A provide good clear sound and a nice solid bottom for a gathering of 300 or less.

You are what you sound like...good sound quality (good music etc..) = more work

If you plan to always use 1 or 2 subs I would go for the ZLX-12P.
They sound very good for the price, and I would consider it a great choice. There is no saying how they will handle a few years of usage, since they came out not so long ago
If you plan to play without subs, I would go for the ZLX-15P in this price range.

I was thinking the same thing. I already purchased a pair of ev zxa1 subs. So i think i will finish the set off with a pair of the ev zlx-12p tops.
I was trying to go light and portable, my back is acting up. I still have my mackie set from years ago and they are heavy

I like my Mackie Thump 15's, they're not enough for say 150+ people but they only weigh 36 lbs a piece and pack some serious "thump" even without a sub

I know a lot folks poo poo on Behringer, however, I have had a set of Behringer B215D and a single B1800D Sub for 3yrs now. I have done a corporate events as large as 400-500 people with this set up and sounded great even when pushed. I've also done small 50-200 people events with just the 2 - 15" and was adequate, albeit lacking a bit of the punch when combined with the 18" sub, but nevertheless a good all around sound. I have also done an outdoor gig with just the 2 - 15" and again adequate sound and carried for 30-50yds away from the front of the speakers with clear sound.
I use to have some EV ELX speakers that were passive. 2 - 15" tops and 2 - 18" subs. Yes those were better sounding in my opinion, but you can't beat the portability of not having to carry around amps.
Since I do not do mobile gigs all that often, I could not see plunking down a large amount of money for a sound system that I would not use often. I also did not want to compromise sound quality. I think the Behringer set up I have now is a nice happy medium for me.

I knew you didn't mean the thumps, I was just trying to say they're a great option for those small - medium size gigs where you don't want to drag around a heavy sub;^]

Maybe I'm wrong here, but if the OP is looking at EV ZLX12s or 15s I doubt that speakers half the price will be what he's after.
Chances are that he's looking for something better than what he had before.

If you want to Buy a Pair of speakers that have very good bass without bringing a sub, I recommend the JBL PRX615m speakers. I use them for all my gigs and most gigs I don't need a sub. The bass response is really good because it a wood cabinet. I also have the Alto TS112a speakers and I wouldn't recommend them unless its for small events. alot of speakers sound good when the volume is low but, when you blast your music, That's when you really know if your speaker is good. The EV ZLX sounds good but, the ELX are better. A speaker in a Plastic cabinet is not the same a speaker in a wooden cabinet. Wood cabinets have a warmer sound and the bass response is better.

I am looking at the ZLX-12P... I already have the ZXA1 12" sub which is working fine for me. I was thinking about the 15's but at my last show, I rolled off the bass on my JBL 15's. I think the 12 and 15 are at the same watt rating so it's not like one if louder over the other. I just worry is the 12 will have enough omph (or at least bass response) over the 15.
I'd like to hear from any of those gigging with the ZLX-12P as to your overall experience.

Go someplace like Guitar Center, or Sam Ash, talk to the pro audio guys. Listen to the speakers. I've noticed most speakers, especially the active/powered speakers, will have an estimated size of crowd label on them. That will help you decide which ones are better suited to your needs and tastes...

Id go for a couple of decent 12" passive tops and 1u amp if you intend to add a sub later, not much point carrying the extra weight of 15s aswell as a sub.
Then after a couple of paid gigs I'd look for a decent active sub since most of the power will be going to the low end so having a matched amp built in will be the easiest option.
I currently run 2 x Wharfedale EVPX 12 tops and 1 or 2 Kinetic 18B Powered subs depending on the size of the function, never had any complaints but quite a few good remarks on sound quality.

I would say go for the ZLX15's. I have a pair of the passive ones. They pack a nice enough punch on the low frequencies to use at smaller events (say less than 120 people) With a pair of good subs you could play about 200 people. On the note of subs, EV are teasing Facebook with close up shots of new speakers that are yet to be shown to the public. They are in the style of the zlx range and rumours are that it could be zlx subs. If it is I will definitely be looking into them, what with the zlx15's being so good.
Happy shopping and hope whatever you choose they work well for you.
Oh yeah and by the way, the weight of the zlx15's shouldn't be anything to worry much about as they are lightweight. I have a passive pair of 12" speakers that are heavier than the powered zlx15's.
