Topic: Rock set help

So Rock has always been my weak point. A very close friend has asked me to DJ his wedding. Long story short it is this Sunday and they want 60-90s rock, No exception. I have allot of the obvious ones, but what songs are your "Goto" or "always work" for you?

Before you ask, I do know my friends that will be there and know what they like to listen to normally. I am not going to play the metal, grunge and alternative that they like to listen to, I know better than that. Just looking for some "slam dunk, always works" like Mustang Sally, but faster dance music.

Like "Some Kind of Wonderful" and the like. Thanks, your help is greatly appreciated!

If they want 60s to 90s rock, just buy some compilations...

There'll be dozens on the market. (90s rock, 80s rock, 70s rock etc). Commercial releases like that will nearly always contain the "goto" tracks.

You're not going to play what they normally listen to? Surely if that's what they like, they'll expect to hear some!

Of course, you could always Google for rock disco/dj playlist and peruse the results. :-)

Thanks guys! Great ideas. Grovin he/they like Halestorm, Disturbed, etc. not really wedding stuff. I have it, just don't intend to use it. If that is a demand, it will be possible.

Tayla, will do shortly! For me, I don't have much time for dance on this one. I have some Rock lists, but most seem better for outings, not wedding where I want people to dance. So I was hoping to see what experience you have had with songs that really work well. Thank you all for the help so far!
 
It comes down to how many of their guests will be into that same music. You may well be able to play 95% rock on the night, or it could be that it's a typical mixture of ages/tastes and you end up playing a broad cross section of genres, with a sprinkling of rock.

If the B&G have asked for only rock, then either (hopefully) most guests will be into it or you'll have a battle on your hands between what the B&G want and what the guests want.
 
Yea, I have that part. Been doing this for 4 years now. Just don't get "Rock only" requests really often, so I have little experience what really works well on that type of crowd for dancing. I know that when I have, I left feeling like a failure when barely anyone dances.

Many close friends know I bring it when I play and get great gigs that barely require I play rock at all. So just want to find out what has worked for you and not do an auto play set. That way I can get this crowd really moving and make a better show for my friend.

Don't do that to yourself. Here's a hint, look around the room. Even if no one is dancing. Look at their feet. Are they tapping their toes? Look at their mouths. Are they singing along? Look at their heads. Are they bopping? If the answer to these questions is yes, you've done your job. Not every crowd will be full of dancers. That doesn't mean they aren't enjoying the music though.....
 
Perhaps worded too strongly. I don't go home and fell bad about myself. I do expect to see some kind of response, head, feet, etc like you referred too. I have had a few shows not live up to expectations, with a majority having a positive review. What I should have said is this is fun for me, I put a TON into my gear, set lists, quality and service. But I do it for the love of music and to see people have fun. Which is why shows for friends are extra fun for me, because I know I helped make the day happen and people have fun.

Not use to short 1 to 2 hr total dance times like in a wedding. I am use to 5 hr set with tons of variation. Unfortunately, one of my regular shows has so many requests 30 to 150 a night (yes requests) that I don't often get a chance to experiment the way I want. So I am still "green" when it come to experience on what works best in diverse situations. Electronics, computers, music, beat matching, I have solid skills there. Just not a whole lot of time this Sunday to make a solid impression, with a Genre I am less comfortable with.
