OK I have a chance to get either Denon 5500's or the 3700's, which set would you get and why? Im leaning more towards the 5500's cause they seem like they offer more but Ive never used them in person.
Thanks for the time and info

What are you planning to do with them/play on them?
Will you be using them primarily as controllers for VDJ?
I have a pair of the HS5500s and think they're great. There's nothing else on the market with their exact feature set. I use them mainly as standalone players though, which is where they excel.
As controllers for VDJ there's a long standing issue with the HS5500 platters causing wobbly audio in VDJ. There are specific older VDJ versions where the 5500s work fine, but in VDJ 7 it's a problem.

Yes, Id use them as standalone players and as controllers for VDJ. It would just depend on what and where we were playing.

As standalone players, the 5500s have a whole host of useful features. You can put a 2.5" hard drive inside (IDE up to 250GB) and they'll play directly from that (it requires a caddy which might be tough to find now). They're literally two decks in one. They have two totally separate audio outputs. This means having a pair actually gives you four decks, and instant backup should one unit die - you still have two decks in the remaining unit.
The screen displays either three or five tracks at once so you can search/browse by way of a keyboard directly, although the width can be an issue if you have long artist and track names - you can't see the remix details at the end. You can create playlists for instant recall of groups of tracks. There's a hotlist area where you can "store" tracks for later in a gig, with a one button recall.
They support use of a hub, so you can connect up to four external drives, or any combo of drives, keyboard, USB flash.
The newer Denon models don't have the same type of screen. They downgraded it to a CD player style vacuum dot display, which only displays max two lines of info. Not much good if you've got thousands of tracks to browse through.

You're not the only one!
Lots of us 5500 owners pleaded with Denon for ages on their forum, even before they unceremoniously dumped the product.
When Pioneer were doing their whole "new species" campaign prior to the release of the CDJ-2000, I seriously thought that's what it was going to be - the Pio version of the 5500 concept, with an improved screen.
Despite all that was asked for on the Denon forum, they went off in the opposite direction and made players that rely on either a computer or an iPad running their Engine software to be able to browse your database. The screens on the players themselves are almost redundant. You can't plug a keyboard or a hub in either. You're expected to bring a separate domestic router and LAN cables with you to gigs in order to network it all together.
I do like the idea of the larger platters on the subsequent models but IMO they took too much other stuff away.
Hopefully VDJ 8 will rectify the warbing audio problem when the platters are on [crosses fingers].

BTW I suggest changing the title of this thread or moving it to the Denon hardware thread, so people can see what it's about, and so you can get opinions from other 5500/3700 users.

We can only move threads to a different forum. Not merge two threads.
