I am planning on getting 5 lights total and was wondering what is a good control system? I am looking for something not to expensive and one to control all of my lights

What kind of lights are they?
Do you plan on:
- Simply turning them on, and let them work with their own built-in programs (maybe daisy chained)?
- Controlling them using controls made especially for them (like ADJ's RFC)?
- Controlling them using DMX hardware?
- Controlling them using DMX hardware + software?
Best regards

Go with all DMX. Start now and you won't look back.
I'm using a Velleman USB/DMX control unit... that goes to a DMX parallel splitter. The splitter keeps you from having to "series" all the wires. It saves some setup/tear down time and lots of cable.
Freestyler is a good basic DMX control software that is ... wait for it... FREE. It works well with Virtual DJ on the same computer. You just need a USB port to operate.
I'm very happy with DMX. It's worth the extra time and expense. It really brings out the capability of the lighting devices.
Here is a shot of my new lasers. Too bad the Red and Purple ones didn't show up. I believe the camera's video record wavelength doesn't go up that high.

Everything is controllable from my laptop. I am pleased it all works.

All of the lights are led dmx lights. I am looking for something to do alittle of both. Auto controls with some of my own personal touches. I don't know how I would connect them to the computer and also was wondering if there are any good stage lighting controllers (like chauvet obey3) that control 5 lights at once through an external device

i have to agree with jimmy, start with DMX and youll never look back, when i first started building my lighting rig, i got a few none dmx lights, theyre were about as much use as a chocolate fire guard, the built in programmes and the audio responce were pants, they never went in time with the music, soooo i went DMX, i to use the velleman box and what more can i say than, its awesome, it was really easy to build and is extremely simple to use in conjunction with freestyler DMX, imm gonna try some more dmx software when i dig my rig back out of the attic in a couple of weeks, that aside, when it comes to dmx and the abilities you gain, there is no better way forward. from lasers to smoke and bubbles, everything can be controlled from a laptop, id recommend the velleman unless your gonna eventually run high high numbers of units in your rig.

Krusy,
There is a bit more work involved running the DMX from a computer. But it is really worth the investment in hopping on that learning curve.
I had to study very hard and concentrate to get a grip on how it all works. I'm pleased to have climbed the mountain. I figure if someone else can do it then so can I.
An "Obey" type controller is a pretty simple way to control your 5 lilghts. Just set your lights to the DMX address of each slider and your then up and working. You have a nice blackout button. And you can build chase scenes. It has a power plug and a DMX cable output to your splitter or first light in the string.
I started with an Obey then moved to a seperate laptop with the Vellaman and Freestyler. Then tried it on my gig laptop and it works just fine. I even use SBDJ's sync program to put music input into the show. Great stuff.
Good Luck.
