Don't use it then?

I hate iTunes too. They rarely have tracks I am looking for. Limited amounts of remixes. That's why I have never use it. I have 2 record pools for audio and 2 video pools I belong to. Anything I can't find on there, I get on Beatport. With this combination, I have never been short on finding tracks I want.

There is DJ life outside of iTunes. Matter of fact life is waaayyyy better.

itunes is the most annoying music software ever.Apple needs to apply the "it just works" idea to itunes.

Quite glad this discussion came up actually.

I am in the final stages of getting rid of anything to do with Apple. Itunes never works for me, it frequently crashes (both on Mac & PC side) and screws up my devices. I have binned a couple of older ipods and I am keeping the ipad 1st Gen 64gb which isn't updateable any more (stuck on iOS5.1) so I am just going to leave it as is and never synch it again.

My 2009 Mac Pro quadcore desktop is getting a brand new 256gb SSD and Windows 7, so I'm not even putting OSx on any of the drives. I will use MS skydrive to sync everthing between machines. MS office on OSx is just the worst thing ever!

The old addage that Apple gear "just works" is now very far from the truth. To be honest the quality of their gear is not as good as it's made out to be so it's goodnight from me and back to reliable Windows and Android.

I'm definitely not an apple fan, actually I own nothing apple, but as a very quick way to buy music I must say I like ITunes. Its a very fast way to get a specific album for an affordable price in a good quality format. Than again, that is the absolute only thing ITunes can do for me... after browsing the store its quickly shutoff again.

Yup I've been saying this for years. I only have an iPod and I bought that to record with my Mixdeck and thank God I can just upload my sets over Wi-Fi so I never have to plug the dam thing into my laptop. It might work for others but never has for me......

Now let's quit with the rants and talk about some iTunes alternatives, make this conversation a little more productive......

when I was in PC I only used winamp (as a player) but still bought some music off of iTunes Store. Now that I'm on MAC, I have to use iTunes but never as a player when I have to DJ, that's why I have VDJ.

When I'm doing a Lounge and it just needs a playlist, then sometimes I'll use iTunes, so that I can easily control it with my iPhone remotely. (the VJD remote app just never works right for me, specially if I have to close the app in my phone for any reason)

Other than that Mac is still very steady for me.

When you download a song with itunes it only displays the the track name, that is really poor.

iTunes blows... intros, outros, mediocre sound quality & not DJ friendly. Only as a last resort will I use it.
A few people recently mentioned Amazon for on the fly purchases.

I prefer Amazon over iTunes.
Singles and full albums are usually cheaper then both iTunes and beatport.
On a personal note, I don't care for AAC files, so Amazon works fine for me.

I hated iTunes too. That is, until I figured a couple things out... Now, I am just indifferent.

Under preferences I checked "Let iTunes Manage My Music". I know, this was very scary for me as it cannot be undone. However, I did it on a computer that I don't use for giging.

I also tweaked where I store my music on my computers. I have two laptops that have two hard drives in them. My C: drive is for the OS and all Programs/Apps that run on it. My X: drive contains all my media, documents, music and junk. I also made iTunes download and store everything in a on drive X: This way I can make the same playlists in iTunes on one computer and copy the M3U playlist files to the other computer and and they still work. That is, as long as both X: drives on both PCs are exact copys. And, nomatter what happens to the C: drive (reformat, crash or whatever) my music drive will (should) still be intact and not have to rebuild as much.

I also have an iPhone and iPad and have been experimenting with using the iPad as a mere backup.

The kicker for me using itunes to organize my music is that I only have to make my playlists in itunes and I can use those same playlists in VDJ and sync them to my iDevices. Making playslists in VDJ doesn't allow me to sync that playlist to an iDevice. (maybe I can, I just don't know how)

I use iTunes to organize my music. I completely understand the frustration if you do not allow itunes to organize your music.

It really doesn't work well if you are going into windows explorer, organizing AND trying to use itunes. You have to do either one or the other. You have to either use the explorer and organize manually, which is a big time suck, or you can use itunes exclusively to organize your music. When you let iTunes organize your music, then, whatever you do to your music files in iTunes, it takes care of on the Windows explorer end. However, you must be okay with the way iTunes organizes and renames your files.

In order to have the best experience with itunes and apple in general is: You have to go ALL IN and be OK with how apple does it. Otherwise, it is best if you use something else to organize.

I've been playing with Media Monkey also. My judgment is still pending on it.

Hope this help a little...

Cheers!

You can make iTunes default to MP3 format 320k on import and convert your libary if you want, also you can create a folder outside of iTunes and Not have it imported into iTunes, but if you make changes you'll have to Repoint that file in iTunes again, so best method is to edit within iTunes... First then Reload from tags in VDJ....

I use iTunes for music download only. I disable all the startup processes it installs on my machine, and let it touch and sync absolutely nothing

As soon as I file is downloaded i remove it from the itunes folder manually, and remove it from iTunes, so that iTunes always thinks that nothing is on my HD

I've been using Mediamonkey for years. Love it to bits, it also has its own script language which is very powerful and is great for setting up batch tagging routines etc.

MM4 even supports video and can tag MP4 files nicely as well...

I even started writing a VDJ plugin that would allow we to navigate my history and playlists from within MM itself.

However, the holy grail would be being able to manage my music in MM and then have it call the VDJ database tools and automatically scan and analyse my music updating the database(s) as it goes - giving me a single interface for managing my media without having to do it all again when I want to add the music to VDJ.

This would also apply to moving, renaming and deleting of files, if MM was hooked in to VDJ then dead links would be a thing of the past.

The FileInfo window in VDJ is OK for quick updates, and others have called for a separate VDJ app for tagging music. By providing interfaces to common media managers that have external interfaces you get the best of both worlds.

The capability is there, it just needs to be exposed in a way that protects the IPR of Atomix but unleashes the power of database management to other applications.

But is exposure a bad thing? If DJs could move between different softwares without having to rescan their music what that be a bad thing? VDJ can import iTunes and Crates, so why not let the VDJ database be read by others?

I know I've mentioned this before, but I still think there is something here that needs to be considered.

Pioneer and Denon both have their own software for playlist management, and I know their needs are different as they are mainly for their hardware media players. but it proves that DJ's will use effective tools to help manage their media.

Having a published API would also allow 3rd party developers to reliably build database tools without having to 2nd guess or frig with the database.

Cheers,

Roy

I applaud any of the deejays in our community that prefer using an Apple desktop or laptop system. Hey if that hardware works for you (as opposed to PC/Windows), great. But from a company observation, Apple has to be the most arrogant entity selling and distributing software. iTunes absolutely sucks donkey dinks. Thank you for posting and sharing your frustration with us. We feel your pain.

I use a mac and I prefer it over windows OS anytime because of its performance. (Low Latency) I don't use iTunes but, I disabled iTunes from making copies of my music files every time I want to play a mp3 file. What I mean is, When you download regular mp3s that are Not from iTunes and when you play them, ITunes opens up and it loads up into the data base. It makes a clone copy and now you lose space on your HD because of second copies. Regular Mp3 & ITunes Copy.

Well i have a Macbook Pro and cannot really agree with you, because "it just works"

I have my folders set up a certain way everything is broken down into decades ect. 90s hiphop and R&B with in the folders are the albums and single tracks then i use the grouping field to put all the party songs into groups like 90shiphophot or 90sR&BHot which i make smart playlist to make up my itunes playlist in VDJ so im always making changes to those folders sand itunes does not recognize the changes have to reload and remove dead links. I use MediaMonkey because i can do all my moving, renaming any editing within media monkey. Then i reload itunes so my my itunes smartlist show up in VDJ. And always exporting my playlist from MM4 to VDJ i really rather not do becuase that one time i forgot to export i had to export at the gig...NO good no good...
