Sorry if this is a really dumb question but I have a Numark Mixdeck with VDJ and I have an old computer mic that I have never really used. I have an adaptor pin that changes it from a small (3/8's??) pin to the 1/4" pin. I tried to test it on the mix deck but didn't hear anything and I also tried to run it off of VDJ and out to the speakers but got nothing as well. Is this just because there is no power coming from the mic to be able to play? A new mic is all of $15 but I'm a basment DJ and will be playing for my family's New Years party. I have no real need for a mic but just thought it might be kinda cool if I could get it to work. Any ideas on if I have something set up wrong or do I need a real Mic?

I know right dumb question lol

Hi, not a dumb question at all, I'm not sure if your computer mic should work or not. Can't think of a reason why it wouldn't though.

Here's a little test you can do, plug your headphones into the mic socket then talk into one or both of the earcups! Headphones wil also work as a microphone. That way you can work out if it's a setting you haven't got right, or if it's your mic that's broken.

Ok thanks I will try that. I know the mic isn't broken cuz I went to just a normal voice recording program on my Laptop and it worked. My only thought behind why it wouldn't work would be cuz it's not a "real" mic it's just a computer mic.

Mics made for use with computers often require power from the computer mic socket to work - so if you plug that mic into a jack on some normal audio equipment, that power won't be there and the mic won't work.

If the mini jack plug on your mic has two black bands around the shaft then it needs power. A standard mono mic would only have one band.

It's similar to (but not the same as) professional mics which need phantom power to work, which is sent from the mixing desk.

Ok Thanks a lot GroovinDJ
