I don't know if I have a mental condition, but it sure feels like it. Ive been DJ'ing for 3 years now, self taught. I got good and smoothly gained the confidence to feel that I could play in any situation regarding my genre (electro house, DNB, Dubstep ect-). I slowly and painfully forced myself out of the bed room, kicking and screaming for I had (I still do? ? ?) a ridiculous fear of playing to the public. Just the thought of it made me sick...playing for crowd as big as any musicians concert. I began questioning myself : "why put myself through this?" "I should just ditch the DJ'ing thing" - But I didn't want to be one of those people who just give up. I felt I had a passion for this and that I was (am) good at it. So I began playing at house parties and what not. I am now 22 years old and own a decent size Bar/club/restaurant to which it fits about 350 people. I DJ there on the weekends along with other local DJs. But even to this point it feels ridiculous to get nervous. I quickly learned that life begins outside your comfort zone. That feeling the rush, nervousness , and anticipation is all part of the process. "Its good to feel something" - Life is hard with everything it throws at you. It has its ups and downs,... but when I'm up on the decks....nothing matters but what I'm doing at that moment. Live the moment and go with the flow. My mind feels clear. But even with the basic experience I'm gaining, I wonder what other DJs or musicians at that, think or what there mentality is before doing any gig. Does everybody feel this rush? It feels way too overwhelming at times and I feel sick. I begin to sweat. I acknowledge that once I begin playing, I definitely become calmer and relax a bit more, its the "getting to that point" that feel like an issue, all self created.
Any advice? I'm really interested in knowing what mentality other DJs have before doing a set.

I guess I am a bit lucky in this respect. I like being the center of attention and being around people. Here's how I look at it: I have a captive audience. They are my audience. I view the event/gig as my own party and I am the host. Never once do I think that I am "performing in from of hundreds of people"
I do still have some jitters. Specially when the floor empties out. I think this is where experience comes in and knowing what will bring them back. All else fails I have a shot of tequilla...or two...calms my nerves and I start having fun. DJ should project that he/she is having fun. The people can feel that vibe.
My advice keep working until you get comfortable. Its a matter of having confidence and removing all doubt. I believe that once you know people are not gonna throw tomatoes at you and walk out in masses, your anxiety will go away.
Question: do you get compliments when you play out? How does that make you feel?

Making a few playlists ahead of time helps me have a mental backup in case the crowd isn't as into a certain genre as I thought they would be.
If I didn't have that rush feeling which is a mixture of excitement with nervousness (not the bad kind) I don't think I would DJ, that rush is what makes me want to do it. Then again, I'm the kind of person who likes roller coasters and turbulence in airplane rides.
;)
cheers

The more prepared I am, the easier I feel starting a night. But once I get going, my confidence peaks. I still get nervous each time I grab the mic (mobile DJ announcements), but that is passing the more times I do it.
I've been spinning electro house lately, starting to do more parties vs. mobile gigs. A LOT more fun for me to just spin a set and not run a whole event (seems like everyone defaults to the DJ as the event planner).
My first few gigs were real rough. They went well because I spent a huge amount of time making sure I was prepared for anything I could foresee. Always have a backup for what ever your providing. The preparations helped my confidence build. Now, it's a set up and go.
Still get nervous before I get on the mic tho.

Read all this thread very interesting and different views as to what happens and how they personally feel. Personally im no pro lucky if I could class myself as a bedroom dj only been spinning or trying to this last 4 5mths now. Music has always been a passion but never struck me as being something id actually love to do. In my spare time is the Numark controller a pille of trax and the headphones then listen to the recordings..
Then joined a virtual world secondlife and scoured around the clubs within that enviroment.. Now its come to the point I have a debut set within a sim at a club this evening 9-11pm GMT will be streaming live. Talk about nerves, Although Ive been to this club a few times and listened to sets etc... Im now pooping myself in case my set just doesnt cut it.. The track selection alone took me hours of sifting thru HOuse tracks at Beatport.. Then the dry runs of the set and recording then listening..
I do imagine live and within a real club its a little different bouncing off others vibes in the room dancers and capture the atmosphere.. So wish had the talent of some djs out there we all have idols of course..
BUt i rekon at the end of teh day if the dj feels the vibe then im sure the audience does too.. But i am pooping and just over thinking and worrying that all will be a damn flop My choice of house trax are completely different to the others that spin there but from what iove heard none actually spion house ethier. I take my hat off to the live venue - club djs.. amazingh how some can just switch off to a degree watch pay note and keep the crowds attention..
Gues we are our own worse critics but thats a good thing right!!!
Stay safe stay lucky & merry xmas to all
interesting thread thanx to the original poster :)

I have been complimented after a set and of course its feels enlightening when I get them. Lets me know all that work and practice was good for something. I don't believe I'm loosing a passion for it because I feel that I haven't really even started getting out there as much as I could. And I agree, I tend to sleep better when I have about 2 to 3 playlist sets built before the gig, making me prepared for any situation. But I guess thats a better way to look at it. I get nervous for every gig because I always want things to go perfect. So I have three things that I make sure I have for every gig that makes life easier of for me.
1. Back up for everything, Laptops, Music, Sound you name it I have a back up in place
2. A few playlists that I can fall back if I need
3. A song list that I have rehearsed a number of times
I am getting good a reading the crowd and filling the dance floor. I am still not great with the mic and I need to work on this.
Nothing beats live performance for learning. You will learn more in your first 4 live gigs than you will playing for a year in your bedroom

I felt exactly the first time I played out, I felt I wasn't worthy of playing at this party and stuff like that.
All you need to do is when you first start is put together a few songs in a row that sound really good to you and your audience but are easy to do (I do an animal rights/real slim shady/dirty talk when i start). This will get you confident and your audience impressed.
If all else fails have a beer/shot/cocktail or two and remember, it's not the end of the world if you bugger it up. I have had a gig where I have plugged my controller into phono instead line input in the mixer, dropped one of the speakers, couldn't get a dancefloor going, got short changed 250 bucks and to top it off i blew the radiator up in my car. But I learnt so so much from the experience, so don't sweat it (:
