Topic: Pioneer ddj-sx review and my serato vdj comparison

由于该帖子已年深日久,可能包含陈旧过时或描述错误的信息。

I own the Pioneer DDJ-SX for last 4 days.

I what I used before - NS6 with Virtual DJ. I am a Video DJ. I will still be using this controller with VDJ in the future.

Why did I get the Pioneer? I saw it, with all the features I knew that it was the best controller to date. Even though I don't use serato, I decided to learn serato, just to get this controller. I intend to use both soft-wares. I still love VDJ because it is much more flexible than Serato. Although I see that Serato is trying to be more flexible that they have been in the past.

Hardware Pioneer ddj-sx; It is an amazing piece of hardware. I was drooling before I got it and I am still drooling. I give it a 9 out of 10 because it does not have a dedicated mic channel; you have to sacrifice one of the channels to use the mic. The position of the pitch slider on the left deck is not the same as the right deck; which is not a major flaw but it is worth mentioning.

Software Serato DJ; The software is great but it fall shorts on a couple issues. I cannot record my video mix in serato because their is no option, there is only an option to record audio. Serato only accepts video in mp4 format, in contrast VDJ accepts almost all formats and will play anything type of video. Serato does not support karaoke (this is fine because most djs don't offer karaoke services) I do, so that is one of the reasons that I love VDJ. Serato does not natively calculate the key of the song. You have to use a third party software to tag the key into the song and then Serato will show the key. I was surprised that a big name DJ software like serato cannot calculate the key of a song. VDJ calculates the key without any other help from third party software.

The pros of the controller and software; the scratching is very tight. Slip mode, dual decks, on board effects and the pads are awesome and they work like a charm. I will be able to do a lot of tricks with this controller on the pads in conjunction with the slipmode.

Conclusion; Serato and pioneer has hit it out the park with this controller and new Serato DJ software. I applaud them for being more flexible than they have been in the past; offering a controller and software that work great together out of the box without any customization, adding great effects, slip mode, dual decks and the amazing performance pads. They didn't hold anything back. I can tell they are trying to get even more DJs to use Serato.
The reason why I didn't like serato in the past was because you could only do what serato wanted you to do with its software (which in my opinion was very limited). Now that those limitations are gone I am willing to give it a try. I was very attracted to VDJ because it is very flexible; tons of audio and video effects, karaoke, clip bank, firetext, scroll text etc etc I am a professional DJ and I have done over 500 paying gigs with VDJ. I have never had a VDJ crash wihle using it natively. I think the fact that VDJ is so flexible is good and also bad. It is good because they allow you to tailor the software anyhow you want; make effects, mapping etc. It is bad because the custom effects and mapping can sometimes make VDJ unstable. As a professional DJ that is the last word you want to hear. I think the VDJ team should hire a team of programmers to make all the effects and they should also make all custom mapping for users like slip mode etc. I am talking from experience when I say that custom mapping is a hit or miss; I had slip mode mapped to my NS6 controller, using the custom mapping with effects caused VDJ to crash (this was at my home in practice). I could not use the custom mapping live in fear that it might crash. I will be using both softwares because I can see the benefit both using both to continue my DJ career. I look forward excitingly to VDJ 8. I think VDJ 8 will be the best DJ software whenever it comes out. I wish is that VDJ partner with a major controller manufacturer and release VDJ 8 with a custom controller. It should include all the effects pioneer is offering on the DDJ-SX and more (performance pads, and slip mode that is built in). I very rarely post to the forum but I had to finally say my two cents.

Thank you for your review. This is very useful as I am thinking of getting this controller.

Can you tell me if there is much latency on the jog wheels/ start buttons etc.? And, the mixer - this is definitely a dedicated external mixer (i.e. it doesn't use the software for EQ/x-fade etc)?

My computer is i7 16gigs ram. Latency is no problem for me. As a DJ it is your duty to buy a high performance computer. If you do that you will have no problem with latency. Scratching is very very tight. The mixer is dedicated and does not need the software to function; you can connect cdjs, turntables, ipods or anything else. Even the mixer effects work without the software. This controller is well made. I was surprised that it only cost $999. I thought they would have sold it for $1999; even at that price it is would have been worth the purchase. My next big anticipation will be the release of VDJ 8. I can't wait to get it because I know it will certainly change the game.

Hi thanks for the response, sounds good. The latency issue is also a factor of the performance of the unit's built in sound card as well as the computer specs, hence why i asked ;)

I know that the DDJ-SX, is not yet mapped for Virtual DJ, but just curious to know if the basic fonctions work?

I wanted to buy it but its sold out everywhere in my area. The DDJ-SX is certainly, going to be a big success!

Guys,

There is already a long running discussion on the DDJ-SX controller Here

No point having two threads discussing the same thing so I will lock this one. Please continue any discussion in the other thread.

Thank you

Keith
