Hey, All.
Been invited to play my first gig in February, a Hard House night, and, as its my first sesh out, kinda looking for as much input as possible.
Lucky me has the first set, from 8-9, so I appreciate I'll be playing to no more than my mates, the bar staff, and the few people who've walked in by accident looking for somewhere else.
So, the killer Q is: in your experience, do you play what you want to play? Do you keep the speed down, or crank it up from the word go? Or, as a vinyl DJ mate has said, 'it's a competiton between you and the next guy, you want to be better than him, screw what he's doing, and make him work for it!'
Any thoughts would be appreciated...

I don't know about the whole competition idea when your opening. As an opener, I would say that your goal is to prime people for the night to come. People are going to be showing up, saying hi, etc., their not going to run out on the floor and hit it hard right off the bat. They want a few drinks and some conversation first. Make sure you hit the club the next few weekends until your gig. Get an idea what the main vibe is, what people are digging. See what the other openers are doing, look to see what is making the crowd bounce while their talking, waiting for their drinks, etc.

There shouldn't be any comp between you, it's not about that. Your a noob remember you just need to be respectful.
Also by playing hard house your already playing what you like so it's a no brainer really.
Hard house is the wrong vibe for that time of night. Too fast, too hard, too soon!
I wish you luck.

Fine advice - thanks both.
Its a three room club, playing D&B, Old Skool Hardcore, and Hard House (Yay, late 90s!!)
Figured I should open as the whole night means to go on, as people will be expecting hard and fast from the get-go. Perhaps some work on the set - we'll start bouncy with the vocally 'fun' tracks, then, as my hour in the limelight progresses, slowly crank it up to the snarling stuff.
If I can, I'll try record the mix on the night, and post it somewhere on the forums.

Old skool hardcore?
You mean the stuff before those idiots introduced happy hardcore in 1995?

Yeah, think so. Not really my bag. Doesn't quite have the energy I look for in music...
