Hi group,
Can anyone provide some guidance on using MIDI Channel values please?
For example, the VCI-400 MIDI map documentation shows it's [FX Button 1 / Left] = Ch 13. Yet it seems that the available vDJ definition file for the VCI-400 sets it up as "KEY_BTN_LEFT" with a Channel = 12. While the vDJ Wiki docs say that the Channel is optional, can someone explain why the Channel designation would be 12 rather than 13 in this example??
Thanks

You already have a thread asking about mappings and the device definition files. They are all related ... http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/166652/Hardware_Technical_Support/Help_understanding_MIDI_Note___CC_Code_values.html
But I will answer your question and you can continue your questions in your original thread.
Just like in your other thread it is the difference between where people start counting verse the computer universe.
There are 16 MIDI channels available on a computer. Now you would count from 1 to 16, but the computer starts at 0.
So, when manufactures document the 'channels' it is in people language and not computer.
About the 'optional' statement in the VirtualDJ documentation - it's optional because majority of controllers only need 1 MIDI channel to operate. However with the Multi-complex hitting the market, manufactures are using other channels just to keep the communication lanes not get jammed up. Which is not really necessary in most cases - but we can control their ignorance or choices to do it.
So in this case the channel designation on this controller is NOT optional because you have an element that uses a specific channel - #13 which is really #12 to the computer.
