This type of event should not be approached the same way as other gigs. You will find that if you go in with a set in mind it will greatly get altered because of the flow of the event. You will be doing a lot of announcements as it is a fund raiser with different games, door prizes, raffles, etc. Your job during most of this will be listening to how the organizers have things laid out, and some times taking charge to keep things flowing.

As for music, take all the requests you get as there will be a wide range of ages and different musical tastes. You're simply there to create an ambiance and keep people happy.

Hope that helps.

I'm sorry that I can't help you but Superaceman has given you what sounds like good advice.

I say "what sounds like good advice" because I trust him and because I have NEVER heard of a Buck and Doe.

What is a Buck and Doe?!?

A Buck and Doe (also referred to as a Jack N Jill) is essentially a fund raiser for the Bride & Groom that usually takes place 4 to 8 weeks prior to their wedding and is put together by the Wedding Party.

Tickets are sold, games are played and raffles are drawn with every penny of the proceeds going to the couple in order to help alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with all the wedding costs.

Damn Canadians what with their healthcare and wedding fundraisers...they aren't perfect tho, they did give us Bryan Adams afterall....lol!

"Healthcare"
Everyone thinks we have great healthcare in Canada, Eh! When I'm away in the USA or Europe that's all I hear.... We pay for it in many ways. We are heavily taxed on every paycheck and when you go to emergency it can take up to two days before you see a doctor. Does that sound like a great healthcare system? I know people that never got to see a doctor and died in emergency waiting. In 99% of our hospitals you sleep in the hallways as there is no place to put all the patients. My family doctor retired 1.5 years ago and it will take up to 3 years for me to find another one. I'm on a 2 year waiting list which I have been told will probably take 3. I have heart desiese and am diabetic and can't even get a prescription for medicin unless I go to a clinic or hospital and spend the day there. This is happening everywhere in Canada... On average we pay up to 20% more in income tax than the USA. I pay 50% of my salary to the Federal and Provincial gouvernment here.

"Wedding Fundraiser"
A buck and doe or Jack and jill are not really fundraisers( That's a horrible name to call it. We don't call a wedding shower a fundraiser!!). Many people choose this over a seperate wedding shower and a Stag as they don't want to do something seperately. Normally the same guests at the wedding will attend the B&D a month or so before the wedding. If you are going to a wedding shower you are gonna bring a gift, play games, etc in the same way you do it at a B&D except there is men and woman all in the same room. At a Stag men don't get gifts but normally get waisted, strippers, etc. Not all guys are into that anymore. A buck and doe is more benificial for gifts as there are more people and no jeliousy and crap that usually follows a stag and trust me, I've seen it happen too many times. A B&D usually benifits the DJ service that is doing the wedding reception as they are normally hired for both functions. Not a bad deal...

Ya im hopeing to do a good enough job so thay will book me for the wedding right now im sinking every penny i have into this fender passport 300 pa any of you use or have yoused a fender pasport 300 pa? As well im looking for some cheep lights any suggestions?

..A word of advice,
Concentrate on your Music Selection and mixing skills for the type of music you will be playing at the wedding,...This will have a much bigger impact on the people your entertaining and the potential future prospects that will come your way as a result... then any light show can ever have...

Remember people dance to the music, not the lights...

Music selection is very critical as it's like your doing the wedding reception. You gotta keep in mind that you are going to be djing for the same crowd if they hire you for the reception. You are going to playing to all adult ages and possibly children depending what kind of night your clients have put together for the B & D. It's all fine and dandy to show your mixing skills but music selection is number one. You are probably going to play a wide variety of music genres that evening. Anouncing is also important. Your most likely gonna be the MC to announce the games, etc. Games and announcements should be pre-planned before the event with your client. This shows your professionalism... announce that you take requests or put a golf pencil and some paper on each table for guests to hand you in requests. People remember these little things. Making your chances of getting the wedding gig even more of a reality.
